Updating an earlier story, DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions backup RB Lamont Warren (shoulder) is now expected to miss an extended period of time. He is scheduled for surgery on his injured shoulder. "He is a solid all around player where he could go in at the halfback spot in base formation and be fine," coach Marty Mornhinweg said. "He was terrific in protection. He was very good in running routes and catching the football. He was solid at all of that."

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg is impressed with the team’s depth at running back and liked what he has seen from RBs James Stewart, Lamont Warren and Aveion Cason. In addition to Stewart, Warren and Cason, the team has RBs Luke Staley, James Mungro and Stephen Trejo. Mornhinweg said Trejo is expected to play at fullback this year, but could play at tight end if it is necessary.

Updating previous stories, John Clayton reports for ESPN the Detroit Lions have officially re-signed RB Lamont Warren to a one-year, $650,000 contract. He was cut two weeks ago in order to allow him to sign the one-year deal that would count $450,000 under the cap.

Curt Sylvester reports for the Free Press Detroit Lions QB Mike McMahon (foot) and LB Barrett Green (back) missed practice today. RB James Stewart (ankle) got to the practice field, but only as an observer. FB Cory Schlesinger and KR/WR Desmond Howard had to leave with the flu. The chances of McMahon, Stewart and Green playing are slim. Barring a miracle recovery by McMahon, Ty Detmer is expected to play quarterback. If Stewart cannot play, Lamont Warren and Schlesinger probably will get the opportunity to pick up the slack.

ESPN's John Clayton reports Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg was told by team trainers that RB James Stewart's ankle injury would take anywhere from two to ten weeks to heal. Stewart will miss his third consecutive game this weekend. RB Reuben Droughns is expected to start again this weekend with Lamont Warren (ribs) serving as the backup.

Tom Kowalski reports for mlive.com the Detroit Lions running attack is missing RB James Stewart and its not likely he will be back all that soon. Without a legitimate running threat, QB Charlie Batch has been overwhelmed by blitzing defenses and his production has plummeted. Stewart didn't practice Wednesday and it appears he'll miss his third straight game Sunday against Tampa Bay. Backup RBs Lamont Warren and Reuben Droughns will try to pick up the slack. "Right now, it still hurts. Unless there's some kind of miracle that happens, playing Sunday (will be doubtful)," Stewart said.

The Associated Press reports the Tennessee Titans beat the Lions 28-25 in the final pre-season game for both teams. Tennessee QB Steve McNair and RB Eddie George didn't play because of nagging injuries. QB Neil O'Donnell who played the first half and the first possession of the second, completed 13 of 20 passes for 166 yards. Titans WR Derrick Mason caught four passes for 54 yards and a TD. Lions QB Charlie Batch threw a 34-yard TD pass to RB Lamont Warren.

Curt Sylvester reports for the Free Press Detroit Lions RB Lamont Warren, out of football in 2000, appears to be the leading candidate to back up RB James Stewart. He has been a steady performer in training camp and has made the most of his opportunities in the pre-season, with six carries for 52 yards (8.7 yards an attempt) and four receptions for 33 yards. With Warren, Sedrick Irvin, Reuben Droughns and Amp Lee competing for the backup job, coach Marty Mornhinweg probably won't make a decision until the end of the pre-season.

After spending last season in the doghouse, Irvin is now enjoying a fresh start with a new staff. "It's a great opportunity for me," Irvin said Friday, the first day of full-squad workouts. Sedrick is right in the ballpark as far as our running back situation," said coach Marty Mornhinweg. Irvin likes the team's new West Coast offense, which includes a lot of passes to running backs.

Tom Kowalski reports Mlive.com that the Detroit Lions have a battle brewing at backup running back. Lamont Warren appears to be the favorite for the backup role entering training camp. He appears to have impressed the coaches the most during mini-camps with his solid hands and decent running skills. Second-year back Reuben Droughns, who missed his entire rookie year, hasn't shown any great moves and appears better suited for fullback. However, that could change with a good pre-season showing. Sedrick Irvin and Amp Lee are also in the mix. Irvin continues to show great hands, but isn't very fast. Lee knows the offense well, but doesn't have good speed and could be on the outside looking in.

Ed Duckworth reports in the Providence Journal that new Patriots RB Lamont Warren is getting over the disappointment of being released by the Colts and he is ready to compete for the Patriots starting RB slot. "I came here to compete for the job," Warren said the other morning, "but I feel like this is such a good team it'll be a winner regardless of who the starter is. I'm not concerned about where I may be on the depth chart right now. I just want an opportunity to show what I can do." Warren is thinking more positively, believing he will prove to be more than a stopgap between Robert Edwards, whose career was placed in jeopardy by an offseason knee injury, rookie draft pick Kevin Faulk of LSU or whatever other veteran Grier may pick up this summer. "I think I'm capable of starting," said Warren. "I've spent five years watching and learning from the best, so I think I'm ready to prove I belong. All I ever wanted was a chance to prove myself and I know I'm going to get that here." Warren also said he is impressed by the level of competition in the AFC East.
