Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta hitless in rehab game

Sun, 22 May 2016 17:05:41 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta went 0-for-2 in a rehab assignment with Class A Peoria Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Aledmys Diaz isn't going anywhere, but St. Louis will likely find some ways to insert Peralta's bat in the lineup when he returns. Meanwhile, he will still have shortstop eligibility, so he is worth stashing in most mixed formats.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta set for rehab assignment

Thu, 19 May 2016 15:40:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) will begin his rehab assignment with Class A Peoria Friday, May 20. General manager John Mozeliak said the organization will not rush Peralta back.

Fantasy Tip: Rehab assignments can last a maximum of 20 days, so expect Peralta back with the Cards by mid-June. Some might view Aledmys Diaz's emergence as a negative for Peralta, but it should actually enable Peralta to gain additional position eligibility. Stay tuned for updates and continue to stash Peralta in all fantasy formats.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta takes batting practice

Wed, 18 May 2016 14:34:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 22 Jhonny Peralta (thumb) took on-field batting practice with teammates Wednesday, May 18.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta appears ready to begin a rehab assignment sooner than later following his March thumb surgery. The original timeline projected an early June return, and Peralta is worth stashing in the majority of seasonal leagues because of his pop from the shortstop position. With the emergence of Aledmys Diaz, Peralta could also see time around the infield and gain additional positional eligibility, which can't be spun negatively.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta rehab update

Sun, 15 May 2016 09:54:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak believes SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) will be cleared to resume all baseball activity soon. If all goes well, he could begin a rehab assignment this week.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta should remain stashed in all fantasy formats, even though Aledmys Diaz has done nothing to warrant losing playing time. The two could see action all around the infield once Peralta returns in order to keep both of their bats in the lineup. Expect him to return to action by early June.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta cleared to swing

Tue, 10 May 2016 23:26:43 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) has been cleared to begin swinging a bat.

Fantasy Tip: Jhonny P still has hurdles to clear over the next couple of weeks before he can begin a rehab assignment. It's clear that Aledmys Diaz will continue to play, and the duo will have to shift around the infield to make it work. Peralta will have to perform in order to play every day. Diaz is worth consideration to sell high on, but it's not imperative you do so. Keep Peralta stashed if you own him.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta could be moved around

Thu, 05 May 2016 15:08:40 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) could play some first or third base in addition to shortstop when he returns from the disabled list in order to keep SS Aledmys Diaz's bat in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta should remain stashed in all fantasy formats. It's unknown if he'll play any other position enough to gain eligibility at a position other than shortstop, but it's probably unlikely. The biggest takeaway is that Diaz's scorching start out of nowhere has earned him a spot on the roster for the rest of the year, most likely.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta could return in June

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 10:49:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is scheduled to be re-evaluated in 10 days and could begin a rehab assignment around May 21, according to general manager John Mozeliak. He would likely need at least one week of rehab games and could rejoin the parent club in early June if all goes well.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta is able to participate in defensive drills but has not yet been cleared to resume hitting. He should remain stashed in NL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues. Peralta's return is not expected to affect the status of 25-year-old rookie SS Aledmys Diaz, who is leading all National League hitters with a .420 average through his first 21 games this season.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta making progress

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:31:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) started light defensive drills this week in the next step to regain strength in his hand after he had surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left thumb March 10. Peralta will be re-evaluated by the team's medical staff in two weeks. He was initially believed to need 10 to 12 weeks to return. The return of Peralta won't necessarily mean SS Aledmys Diaz will be removed from the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta should remain stashed in all fantasy formats. Diaz, who is hitting a cool .466 (27-for-58 with three home runs and 11 RBI) could make things very interesting when Peralta returns. He could make playing time even more scarce for Jedd Gyorko or Kolten Wong at second base if St. Louis chooses to use him at the keystone. Stay tuned, but as long as Diaz continues to hit, he has value in all leagues at a shallow position.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta to start activities

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 09:12:23 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) will meet with a doctor Monday, April 25, and is expected to begin baseball activities early next week. "We'll see what he says. After that, I think that I will start doing some work with the bat and the glove," Peralta said. "I also need to continue rehabbing to regain full motion in the finger, have to work on improving flexibility."

Fantasy Tip: Jedd Gyorko and Aledmys Diaz have really struggled defensively in place of Jhonny P, so there's little question that he'll return to the lion's share of work at shortstop. Thumb injuries are tricky, but he's worth stashing in mixed leagues.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta has cast removed

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 15:39:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) had the cast on his left thumb replaced with a splint and has continued with cardio workouts and lower body exercises while his hand continues to heal. Peralta is optimistic about his return five weeks after sustaining the injury.

"I feel pretty good," Peralta said. "The doctor says there is nothing to worry about, that everything looks good. Now we have to work out and rehab."

Fantasy Tip: Peralta is likely still at least a month away from returning but remains a viable stash option in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. Stay tuned for updates over the coming weeks, as Peralta will be an add candidate in the majority of seasonal leagues sooner than later. He has a .269/.335/.427 slash line over the past two years with an average of 62 runs, 19 home runs and 73 RBI, which are nice numbers for a shortstop.
