Cubs | Joe Nathan to pitch Wednesday

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:58:47 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Joe Nathan (elbow) is scheduled to pitch Wednesday, July 20, for Class AAA Iowa, and he might be added to the big club's roster for the weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He has allowed just two runs and three hits with two walks over nine innings in 10 appearances. Manager Joe Maddon confirmed Nathan will not be used to close games.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is making his way back from Tommy John surgery. He is likely to work in late innings as a setup man, and he will only help those in deeper NL-only rotisserie fantasy leagues at this point.

MLB | Joe Nathan intends to pitch in 2016

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 17:42:01 -0800

Free-agent RP Joe Nathan (Tigers) is "definitely planning on playing this season," according to agent Dave Pepe, who added that his workouts are going well.

Fantasy Tip: The 41-year-old right-hander missed the entire 2015 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and has received interest from 10 teams. He should be viewed as a desperation flier in all fantasy formats at this point and is unlikely to resume pitching before May.

MLB | Joe Nathan garnering plenty of interest

Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:00:29 -0800

Free-agent RP Joe Nathan (Tigers) is receiving interest from 10 teams, but he is not close to making a decision on who to sign with, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is currently recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, and at 41, there is no telling what is left in the tank for the veteran. If the cookie crumbles in his favor, there could be save opportunities in his future, but at this point, he is nothing more than a desperation flier in the endgame of drafts. Stay tuned for updates.

MLB | Joe Nathan eyes late-spring return

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 13:27:57 -0800

Free-agent RP Joe Nathan (Tigers) told MLB Network Radio that he expects a May or June comeback from elbow surgery at the earliest.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan could be a decent candidate to close games if his elbow rebounds and some team's stopper falters. For now, stay tuned to see where he lands. He may make a good end-of-draft flyer in mixed leagues if you can draft and stash away players.

MLB | Eight teams pursuing Joe Nathan

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 17:38:25 -0800

Eight teams have expressed interest in free-agent RP Joe Nathan (Tigers) at the winter meetings this week, including the Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is recovering from his second Tommy John surgery and won't resume pitching until May or June in a best-case scenario, so fantasy owners shouldn't expect much out of him in 2016. Don't be surprised to see the 40-year-old right-hander ink a minor-league deal soon but the odds of him closing again are highly unlikely.

Tigers | Joe Nathan to return to Detroit?

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 11:25:33 -0800

The Detroit Tigers are said to be willing to consider re-signing RP Joe Nathan (elbow) to a minor league deal. Nathan is expected to be ready to return a month or two into the season and is expected to resume throwing soon.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is a previously elite closer but is now 40 and is coming off his second Tommy John surgery. There should be no expectations surrounding him for fantasy owners in any formats entering the 2016 season.

Tigers | Joe Nathan's option declined

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 14:44:50 -0800

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan's (elbow) 2016 option for $10 million was declined by the Tigers Tuesday, Nov. 3, making him a free agent. Instead, the Tigers will pay him a $1 million buyout. Nathan suffered an elbow injury in April that ended his season, and he underwent his second Tommy John surgery as a result. Nathan still plans to return when he's done with his rehab.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is a 40-year-old reliever coming off his second TJS of his career, so he won't be on anyone's fantasy radar going into 2016. He'll likely land somewhere on a minor league deal and could factor into a team's bullpen situation as a late-inning setup man, but he's highly unlikely to be closing again.

Tigers | Joe Nathan has surgery

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 11:12:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is done for the year, and his career could also be over. Joakim Soria is the Tigers' ninth-inning stopper now, and he's been excellent ever since Nathan went down early in the season due to injury. Soria could easily become a top-10 closer in 2015.

Tigers | Joe Nathan plans on returning

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 14:28:06 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) said he plans to attempt to return from Tommy John surgery after being diagnosed with tears of the ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator in his right elbow. He has yet to schedule his surgery, but he's been told to expect a longer timetable for recovery than a typical Tommy John procedure, because of the flexor tear. Nathan won't pick up a ball for roughly eight months. He has a $10 million option for next year, but the Tigers can buy him out for $1 million.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be a very tough uphill battle for Nathan to continue his major league career. Back in Detroit, Joakim Soria's path to remain the closer for the rest of the year just became much easier. He could eventually become a top-15 fantasy closer in 2015.

Tigers | Joe Nathan update

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 07:44:17 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery after tests revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor pronator tendon.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is expected to discuss his plans on whether he intends to continue his career at a later date. The torn flexor tendon will likely add a few months to his recovery timetable, which is usually six to nine months for a reliever.
