Mon, 13 May 2013 16:15:35 -0700 Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (finger) is available to pinch hit Monday, May 13, after spraining the little finger on his right hand while sliding Saturday, May 11. Valbuena will get at least one more day of rest Tuesday, May 14, with the team facing a left-handed pitcher. Fantasy Tip: Cody Ransom has been playing in Valbuena's absence, and the two third baseman have been locked in a platoon at the hot corner. They're both useful in deep NL-only leagues.
Fri, 03 May 2013 11:42:50 -0700 The Chicago Cubs activated 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 3, and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa. Fantasy Tip: Stewart wasn't swinging the stick well during his rehab assignment, and he'll need to prove to the club he's ready for a call-up. Plus, the platoon at third base between Luis Valbuena and Cody Ransom has been effective. When Stewart does return, take notice in deep mixed leagues if you need the power potential at corner infield.
Thu, 02 May 2013 10:43:52 -0700 Chicago Cubs 3Bs Luis Valbuena (five) and Cody Ransom (three) have combined for seven home runs in 27 games while playing the third base position this season. Last year, Cubs third basemen combined for 12 round-trippers. Fantasy Tip: Power production isn't unprecedented for Valbuena -- he hit 17 home runs at the Triple-A level in 2011 and has posted .400-plus rates of slugging regularly -- but his pace is still surprising and unlikely to continue. Ian Stewart (quadriceps) appears to be nowhere near contributing to this effort thanks to his struggles on the farm.
Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:01:46 -0700 Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in a rehab game with Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, April 23, and he's only 2-for-24 with a double and three RBIs in seven rehab games. Fantasy Tip: Cody Ransom and Luis Valbuena have been seeing time at third base in the absence of Stewart. It's unclear when Stewart will return from the DL, but expect Ransom to be sent out when that happens. Although both hit from the left side, Stewart and Valbuena could form a platoon at the hot corner. Stewart has more power, but you have to wonder if his injuries will continue to take a toll on his home run swing. He's worth owning in deep mixed leagues, though.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 17:14:39 -0700 The Chicago Cubs do not have a lot of depth in the field. Newcomer INF Cody Ransom is considered the backup at second base, shortstop and third base, at least until 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) is healthy enough to return.
Tue, 16 Apr 2013 13:43:14 -0700 The Chicago Cubs claimed 3B Cody Ransom off waivers from the San Diego Padres Tuesday, April 16, and designated RP Hisanori Takahashi and INF/OF Brent Lillibridge for assignment to make room for RPs Kevin Gregg and Kameron Loe. Fantasy Tip: The Cubs bullpen is now basically down to three closing options after Takahashi was cut: Shawn Camp, James Russell and Carlos Marmol. Right now, Dale Sveum is using some sort of committee between Camp and Russell, but it's conceivable that Marmol could earn the job back if he performs well in less stressful situation. Grab Marmol if you're desperate and willing to live with what could be another roller coaster ride if he pitches in the ninth again.
Fri, 12 Apr 2013 15:57:25 -0700 The San Diego Padres purchased the contract of RP Thad Weber from Triple-A Tucson Friday, April 12. 3B Cody Ransom was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 19:49:17 -0700 San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said Friday, March 29, that 2B Jedd Gyorko will play at second base, with 3B Cody Ransom at third base, when the team faces a left-handed starting pitcher. When the team faces a right-handed starter, Gyorko will shift over to third base, and 2B Alexi Amarista will get the start at second base. Fantasy Tip: Gyorko is a must-have for all fantasy owners, as he'll play regularly, and will have eligibility at 2B, 3B, MI and CI. Amarista should play a little more than Ransom, but both are best used in NL-only fantasy leagues of 10 or more teams.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:17:00 -0700 San Diego Padres 2B Logan Forsythe (foot) is visiting with a specialist in San Diego after dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. There is a chance that he'll need to start the year on the disabled list, according to manager Bud Black. 3B Cody Ransom will likely take his roster spot and could start at third base on opening day. 2B Jedd Gyorko could also move to third base with 2B Alexi Amarista playing second, but the chances are that Gyorko will remain at the keystone. Fantasy Tip: This is a tough break for Forsythe. Ransom can probably be ignored in all leagues, especially if Forsythe can make it back before Chase Headley (thumb) returns from the infirmary.
Tue, 26 Mar 2013 21:21:55 -0700 Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres 2B Jedd Gyorko is likely to move from second base to third base if 2B Logan Forsythe (foot) is placed on the 15-day disabled list to start the regular season. 2B Alexi Amarista is expected to take over as the starting second baseman, with INF Cody Ransom making the roster as a reserve infielder.
