Tigers | Victor Martinez not swinging

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 10:08:28 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) will rejoin the team Tuesday, June 2, but he's not expected to come off the disabled list during the series against the Oakland Athletics. He is making progress with his left knee in workouts, but he hasn't resumed swinging a bat after going on the DL a week and a half ago.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound like V-Mart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is anywhere near a return to the active roster, and the team will likely bring him along slowly. At this point, it's basically a lost season for Martinez, and it remains to be seen if he will be able to regain any pop in the second half of the season.

Tigers | Still no timetable for Victor Martinez

Fri, 29 May 2015 18:37:25 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) is working out in Florida Friday, May 29, and he will return to the team next week. There is no indication if he will be ready to play upon his return.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) appears to be inching closer to a return, but until he is back in the lineup and swing the bat well, he can remain on the backburner at FantasyScore.

Tigers | Victor Martinez starting rehab

Fri, 22 May 2015 13:32:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) will begin his rehab in Florida Friday, May 22, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) doesn't have a timeline for his return, and it could be a while longer than the normal 15-day DL stint. Rajai Davis ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) should benefit the most with more playing time in the DH spot, and he's been hot of late, making him a value play mainly for his speed at FantasyScore.

Tigers | Victor Martinez received shot

Tue, 19 May 2015 13:33:50 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) received a cortisone shot in his left knee last Thursday, according to manager Brad Ausmus. The team does not want Martinez to pick up a bat for a week.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has no timetable for a return, and it's likely he'll need more than the allotted 15 days on the DL. You should be hesitant in using him at FantasyScore when he returns until we see signs that his swing and health are back to 100%.

Tigers | Victor Martinez officially on DL

Tue, 19 May 2015 11:14:59 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation Tuesday, May 19.

Fantasy Tip: After hitting .335 with a career-high 32 home runs and 103 RBI in 2014, Martinez's ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) 2015 season is on the way to being a bust for his fantasy owners. He has just one home run and is hitting .216 (24-for-111) after undergoing left knee surgery this spring. He hasn't bounced back and has had a lack of power as a result. There's a good chance he'll need more than the 15 days on the DL to rest. In his absence, Rajai Davis ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) figures to see more playing time as the designated hitter. He's useful at FantasyScore for his speed on the base paths.

Tigers | Victor Martinez heading to DL?

Tue, 19 May 2015 09:40:35 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) could be on his way to the disabled list after the team recalled OF Tyler Collins from Class AAA Toledo (Ohio) Tuesday, May 19. Collins was hitting .248 with no home runs and nine RBI in 32 games with the Mud Hens, and he was the final cut from the opening day roster. Martinez has been fighting through soreness in his twice surgically-repaired left knee all year. He tweaked his knee again Monday, May 18, and went 0-for-4 to extend his hitless streak to 13 at-bats. Martinez is hitting .141 with one extra-base hit in 85 at-bats against right-handed pitchers, and he refuses to hit right-handed against righties.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) came up gimpy trying to beat out a double play in Monday night's game. His knee ailment is likely the main culprit for his slow start and lack of thump at the plate. Hopefully for his owners, a break and some rest will do him good, but this could very well be a lost season for the veteran switch hitter. If Martinez needs a DL stint, it'll raise the value of Rajai Davis ($3,000, 6.0% of cap), who has mainly been starting against left-handed pitchers.

Tigers | Victor Martinez struggling

Mon, 18 May 2015 20:41:57 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) is hitting only .216 this season but is not making any excuses. "If I'm playing, it's because I'm able to go out there and put good swings and good at-bats," Martinez said. "Like I said before, it's not excuse, the knee or anything like that."

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) appears to be limited by his knee but is still trying to play. He has only three hits in his last seven games. Owners on FantasyScore may want to avoid using Martinez until he produces more at the plate.

Tigers | Victor Martinez back in the mix

Mon, 18 May 2015 12:13:19 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez is batting fourth as the designated hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers Monday, May 18. Martinez last started a game Wednesday, May 13.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) pinch hit Sunday, May 17, but otherwise he was riding pine with the Tigers unable to utilize him as a designated hitter while visiting the St. Louis Cardinals. Martinez has looked to be about to break out of his early-season slump at times, but he is currently sporting a .150 average (3-for-20) over his last six games. View Martinez as a high-risk, high-reward play in all fantasy formats, at least until he turns in a consistent run at the dish.

Tigers | Victor Martinez pinch hits

Mon, 18 May 2015 04:59:01 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) pinch-hit Sunday, May 17, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Martinez had been unavailable the previous three games.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) was likely held out due to his injury and the fact the game was in a National League ballpark, which means no designated hitter. Wait for Martinez to make a full return to the lineup and then see how he fares.

Tigers | Victor Martinez still ailing

Thu, 14 May 2015 07:28:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) is still having issues with his surgically repaired left knee, but he said he will not consider hitting strictly right-handed. Martinez will be relegated to pinch-hitting duties in St. Louis this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart ($4,200, 8.4% of your cap) should be avoided the rest of the week until the DH is back in place.
