Tigers | Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez go deep

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:03:31 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) and DH Victor Martinez (knee) both hit home runs in the spring game Thursday, March 26. Cabrera's home run was a line drive that looked like his swings from two or three years ago. He also nearly homered on a sacrifice fly to right field in the game. Cabrera will take the day off Friday, March 27, before playing in three straight games.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news to see both Miggy and V-Mart go deep in the same game after they were both behind in spring training due to injuries. Cabrera's old line drive stroke is a welcome sight for those that selected him later in the first round of fantasy drafts. If Cabrera stays healthy, he should continue to produce like a first-rounder.

Tigers | Victor Martinez has knee soreness

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:39:55 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) said that he had some soreness in his left knee after the spring game Thursday, March 26, but that it's something he'll have to deal with.

Fantasy Tip: That's not exactly what you want to hear from a player coming off recent knee surgery. This could be something to monitor for V-Mart all season long. Martinez has been a consistent contributor across the board for fantasy owners in his career, and the new risk-reward profile for him could make him a value pick in drafts if he can stay healthy all year.

Tigers | Victor Martinez not in first base plans

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 14:36:50 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) will not play first base anytime soon and is the fourth option at the position "right now," according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: Unless Martinez ends up behind the plate, which isn't happening, whether he plays in the field or not is irrelevant for 2015. He is a solid fantasy contributor and worth a selection in the early middle rounds, but make sure not to pay for last year's career-best production. Also, continue to check back for updates on his progress through the rest of the spring.

Tigers | Victor Martinez to DH Sunday

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 14:29:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) will make his spring debut as the designated hitter Sunday, March 22, in the split-squad game.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart ($5,400; 10.8% of your cap) still has some ground to make up, but his status for Opening Day looks promising. He's an upper-echelon first baseman on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Victor Martinez may play soon

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 07:21:40 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) could play in a spring training game as early as Sunday, March 22, depending on how he runs the bases Saturday, March 21.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is working his way back from his knee injury but probably will only need a few spring training games to prepare for the regular season. Martinez likely will be selected in one of the earlier rounds of most mixed drafts.

Tigers | Victor Martinez runs cones

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 07:08:30 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) ran the cones in 10-to-15-yard bursts Wednesday, March 18. He didn't make very difficult cuts, but he was turning around the cones much like you would do running the bases. He took batting practice afterwards. Manager Brad Ausmus said "there are still hurdles to cross," when asked if Martinez would be ready for the season opener.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart ($5,400; 10.8% of your cap) slots in at first base on FantasyScore, although he's predominately a DH. With his checkered history of knee issues, it's tough to slot that much of your cap on him initially.

Tigers | Batting practice for Victor Martinez

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 18:56:38 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) was able to take batting practice Tuesday, March 17, as he continues to progress in his rehab from a knee injury.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez might be able to make his Grapefruit League spring debut in the next few days. Confidence is high that Martinez will be ready for the regular season opener. At 36, he still has something left in the tank, but don't overvalue him based on last season's big numbers. A step back is likely at this age, and he should be targeted in the middle rounds on draft day.

Tigers | Victor Martinez nearing game action

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 06:53:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) ran the bases Saturday, March 15, and manager Brad Ausmus would not rule out Martinez appearing in his first spring training game this week.

Fantasy Tip: At 36, regression is likely for Martinez, and paying top dollar for another 30-home run season is ill-advised. It was the first time he reached the benchmark, after all. Martinez remains a viable target in the early middle rounds, though.

Tigers | Victor Martinez runs sprints

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 13:49:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) ran straight-ahead sprints Thursday, March 12, and the next step in running the bases, according to head athletic trainer Kevin Rand.

Fantasy Tip: Paying top dollar with the expectation Martinez will return last season's career-best line is unwise. At 36, regression is likely, and Martinez isn't starting the season with a clean bill of health, either. He is a viable target in the early middle rounds, but another season with 30 home runs and a .335 batting average is unlikely.

Tigers | Victor Martinez is making progress

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 16:25:35 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) hit outside of the indoor batting cages Monday, March 9, for the first time since he underwent surgery on the torn meniscus in his left knee a month ago. "I feel good," Martinez said. "It was the first time in a while and everything was fast, even BP. But I expected it to be like that." Martinez closed his final round of batting practice by driving a couple balls over the fence. He's on the front end of his timetable for return, and being ready for opening day is looking a little more realistic.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is coming off of a career-best season. News of him possibly being ready for Opening Day is positive for his outlook this season, but it's ill-advised to pay full price on a career year in drafts. Martinez is a solid middle-round target for his high batting average and run production, but beware of a decline in his home run total.
