Harvey had two at-bats against the Marlins before he "felt something in the muscle." Harvey hadn't played since Feb. 28 when he pulled a muscle in his chest. Manager Ron Gardenhire said that Harvey will try to play through the injury.

The early favorite for the job heading into spring training is OF Jason Kubel, provided he can stay healthy this season. Kubel's biggest challengers will likely be 1B Ken Harvey and C Matthew LeCroy.

"That's to be determined," general manager Allard Baird said. "There are a lot of variables involved. We've got Huber and, in a perfect world, I'd like to see him [Huber] go to Triple-A and play a full year at first base. Right now, Stairs can move all over as an extra guy and (Sweeney), obviously, is first base and DH."

Harvey has been dealing with a sore back for about two weeks, and is hitting only .129 (4-for-31) during the month of May. Since May 8, he's been able to bat only five times. The team isn't sure what is wrong with Harvey's back, but Harvey believes he'll get an MRI taken on it Monday, May 23.

Harvey had snared a bases-loaded groundball and was preparing to throw to home plate when the collision occurred. Harvey remained on the ground and appeared to be in considerable pain, but was later able to walk off the field and was taken to a hospital for X-rays on his right wrist and forearm.
