MLB | Justin Morneau to sit out half the season

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 15:03:15 -0700

Free-agent 1B Justin Morneau (elbow) had surgery in December to fix a tendon in his elbow and will not be able to swing until June. He has not ruled out a return later this year if a team gives him a shot.

Fantasy Tip: The 34-year-old did hit .310 last year, but he played in just 49 games due to concussion issues. The aging vet has plenty of injury concerns and has seen his power drop in recent seasons. Morneau can still hold his own against righties, which could make him a daily bargain in the second half of the season if a team takes a chance on him.

MLB | No market for Justin Morneau?

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 04:51:14 -0700

Free-agent 1B Justin Morneau (Rockies) has not had much luck on this year's market, with only one team (Cleveland Indians) reporting interest.

Fantasy Tip: Morneau hit .310-3-15 last year in only 49 games, as neck and head issues conspired to ruin a follow-up season to 2014, where he won the National League batting crown. If he lands a job, consider Morneau as an end-of-draft selection in mixed leagues or even a free agent taken off the board once the season starts.

Pirates | Pittsburgh out on Justin Morneau

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 12:28:29 -0800

Free-agent 1B Justin Morneau (Rockies) said the Pittsburgh Pirates are not interested in signing him.

Fantasy Tip: Morneau was limited to just 49 games in 2015, and entering his age-35 season, there are a lot of risks attached to his fantasy stock. Stay tuned for where he signs and what his projected role will be. There is upside in the right situation, but it is difficult to top hitting at Coors Field, so Morneau is likely only an option in only-universes and cavernous mixed formats. Additionally, he hasn't topped the 20-homer benchmark since belting 30 in 2009.

Rockies | Justin Morneau's option declined

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 10:47:02 -0800

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau's option for 2016 was declined Thursday, Nov. 5. Morneau said he intends to continue playing.

Fantasy Tip: Morneau had a nice renaissance in Colorado, but his concussion issues resurfaced. If he lands in the right situation, he could be an option at the end of traditional drafts.

Rockies | COL declines option on Justin Morneau

Thu, 29 Oct 2015 17:22:49 -0700

The Colorado Rockies have declined their mutual option with 1B Justin Morneau for the 2016 season. He would have earned $9 million next year if the team had decided to keep him but he will receive a $750,000 buyout instead.

Fantasy Tip: The 34-year-old Morneau will now become a free agent. He hit .310 with three home runs and 15 RBIs over 168 at-bats but has been plagued by injuries over the last few seasons. Don't be surprised if he latches on with an American League team that can give him an opportunity to serve as a DH.

Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Morneau out

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 15:24:02 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez and 1B Justin Morneau are not in the lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed SP Patrick Corbin Thursday, Oct. 1. 1B Wilin Rosario is at first base and is batting cleanup, while OF Kyle Parker is starting in right field and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Rosario ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) is the value pick you should run with on FantasyScore tonight. Rosario has a slash line of .265/.311/.398 with two of his six home runs against lefties in 2015.

Rockies | Justin Morneau out of lineup Sunday

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:29:16 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood Sunday, Sept. 27. C/1B Wilin Rosario will play first base and bat fifth.

Rockies | Justin Morneau stays hot

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 06:11:26 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau went 4-for-4 with an RBI during the Rockies' 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, Sept. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Since returning from injury Friday, Sept. 4, Morneau ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) owns a .385/.458/.519 slash line through 16 games. However, his seven runs and three RBI are disappointing totals given how well he has produced at the dish. Expect his counting stats to catch up, but the Rockies finish the season with six consecutive road games, so he won't have the Coors Field crutch. Morneau is a matchup play at FantasyScore going forward.

Rockies | Three Rockies lefties out

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 10:50:15 -0700

Colorado Rockies SS Jose Reyes, OF Carlos Gonzalez and 1B Justin Morneau are not in the lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed SP Jeff Locke Thursday, Sept. 24. SS Cristhian Adames is starting at shortstop and hitting second, 1B Wilin Rosario is at first base and is hitting cleanup, while OF Kyle Parker is in right field and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: If you're going to choose a sleeper pick on FantasyScore among this trio, go with Rosario ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) against the lefty in a run-producing spot in the lineup at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
