Fifteen modern-day finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame were announced Saturday, Jan. 7, and they are joined by two senior nominees. A selection committee in Indianapolis will meet in Indianapolis Feb. 4 to determine the 2012 Hall of Fame class. John Crumpacker, of, reports the San Francisco 49ers' transformation to a 3-4 defensive scheme will allow DE Andre Carter to become the team's primary pass-rush specialist in the 'elephant' mold of former DE Charles Haley or Hall of Fame LB Lawrence Taylor (Giants).

Raiders | More Jewelry for Romanowski?

Michael Felger reports for the Boston Herald that LB Bill Romanowski of the Oakland Raiders will be playing in his fifth Super Bowl. Romanowski’s teams have won all of those appearances, giving him four rings. If Oakland wins, Romanowski will become only the second player in NFL history besides Charles Haley to win five Super Bowls.

Lions | Looking for Edwards to Add Some Weight

The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions rookie DE Kalimba Edwards is looking to put on some weight. He said he has a hard time keeping weight on. The Lions hope he can add 10 to 12 pounds, but defensive line coach Charles Haley said they're not going to set a weight for him. Edwards is scheduled to compete for the starting job at right defensive end.

Tom Kowalski reports for Detroit Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg said he has about five undisclosed candidates for the team's vacant defensive coordinator position. Also, Mornhinweg won't make final decisions on naming Charles Haley as the defensive line coach until a defensive coordinator is hired. The coach is also giving consideration to hiring an offensive coordinator this season after not having one last season. Even if he does, Mornhinweg will continue to call all the plays and he doesn't anticipate a change in that for the foreseeable future.

49ers | Help On the Way

Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat the San Francisco 49ers may have netted three starters with their first three picks in the NFL Draft. They were able to fill vacancies at three spots with LB Jamie Winborn of Vanderbilt in the second round and RB Kevan Barlow of Pitt in the third round to go along with first round pick, DE Andre Carter of Cal. Barlow may be the early favorite to take over at RB. Hope remains for RB Garrison Hearst, but, as coach Steve Mariucci said, they are "not counting on him." GM Bill Walsh believes Carter can rush the passer in the mold of past 49ers greats Fred Dean and Charles Haley.

Lions | Porcher Looking to Rebound

As an update to previous reports, Detroit Lions DE Robert Porcher is working hard this off-season to return to form after a very disappointing 2000 season. Porcher, as reported, has been working with new defensive assistant Charles Haley during the off-season. Last year, Porcher read a report that called him "just another defensive lineman" and he is using that as motivation this year.

The Detroit News reports Charles Haley, the new assistant defensive line coach for the Detroit Lions, is busy trying to make the transition from a player to a coach. He's been busy watching game tape on the Lions defensive linemen to become familiar with their previous style of play and approach. Haley noted the big things are easy for defensive linement to learn, it's the little things that are the most difficult.

According to their official site, the Detroit Lions have hired former NFL DE/LB Charles Haley as a pass rush specialist/defensive line coach. Also, the Lions are expected to name Larry Kirksey as their new wide receivers coach. He is currently in the role of assistant head coach/wide receivers with Texas A&M.

Redskins | Dropping out of Phillips Race

The Washington Post reports the team is on the brink of dropping out of the Lawrence Phillips race and they will instead focus on signing draft pick Champ Bailey and free agent DE Charles Haley. Bailey's agent feels it will take more than $2 million per season for Bailey to accept a five-year deal, while the team wants to keep any five-year deal less than $2 million per season. As far as Phillips goes, coach Norv Turner spoke to Phillips and according to sources of the Post the team may bring in him for a visit next week, although the team expects him to sign elsewhere. Haley's agent told the Redskins they are Haley's top choice but no deal is imminent.

The Washington Post reports that negotiations between the Redskins and LB Charles Haley have stalled. Based on a report from yesterday, the 49ers are reportedly the favorites in the race to sign Haley. Some team officials said they suspect they're being used by Haley's camp to drive up the price tag for the 49ers and Carolina Panthers.

According to a Washington Times report, Redskins LB Ken Harvey is now expected to retire. He lost this starting position earlier this off-season and apparently he has decided not to try to comeback from last year's injury. The team reportedly will use Harvey's salary cap savings to pursue RB Lawrence Phillips, who is still just a possibility, or LB Charles Haley, who according to team sources, the team especially coach Norv Turner remains quite interested in as a pass rushing specialist.

The Washington Post reports that the Redskins were impressed with Charles Haley's workout for the team today and they will reportedly enter the bidding for his services. Both Coach Norv Turner and Haley talked highly of the situation after today's workout. Turner said Haley, who has battled lower-back injuries in recent years, could be an asset to the team, particularly on third-down, passing situations. Haley said Washington is one of the teams he would love to play for. According to his agent, Haley has pending offers from Carolina and San Francisco. "I want to take a secondary role," Haley said. "I want to do whatever it takes to win. If that's 10 plays, 50 plays - I'll do whatever it takes to win. That's why I play the game: To win. But I just don't want to play every down." The Redskins reportedly have about $2.6 million available on their salary cap, according to Haley's agent.

The Contra Costa Times reports the San Francisco 49ers aren't the only team trying to land DE Charles Haley. Haley recently worked out for the 49ers and is on his way to visit with the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins, too.

The San Jose Mercury News reports QB Steve Stenstrom and DE Charles Haley remain on the top of the "want list" of the San Francisco 49ers. With DL Chris Doleman retiring, the team opened up roughly $225,000 under the salary cap. The expected retirement of OL Harris Barton will open another $225,000 under the salary cap.
