Tue, 29 Aug 2006 19:39:16 -0700
The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said struggling backup QB Mike McMahon will not play in Thursday night's preseason finale, Aug. 31, at Dallas. O'Sullivan will play the fourth quarter. The coach wants to get a better look at QB J.T. O'Sullivan. Childress insisted the plan was not an indicator of McMahon's chances of making the team. "I think it speaks more that J.T. hasn't played in some of those games, or at least wasn't scheduled to play, and I just want to give him a full quarter to see what he can do," he said.

Kevin Seifert, of the Star-Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson appears to be beating out QB Mike McMahon for the No. 2 quarterback job. Jackson had a solid outing Saturday, Aug. 19, with the first- and second-teams while McMahon was benched midway through the fourth quarter. McMahon said of his performance, "I just wasn't comfortable out there. I probably need to relax and just trust the offense. ... It's just a thing where next time I'll have to do better. I can't worry or try to think about where I stand with [coaches] now."

Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings rookie QB Tarvaris Jackson made a strong bid to be the team's No. 2 quarterback Saturday, Aug. 19. Jackson got off to a quiet start in his team's 17-10 preseason victory over Pittsburgh, but the final numbers were impressive: 9-of-11 passing for 80 yards and a touchdown and a passer rating of 127.3. Compare that to the final stat line for QB Mike McMahon, who came on with 6:07 to play in the third period and went 1 for 7 for 42 yards, an interception and a passer rating of 12.5. Is Jackson officially pulling away from McMahon in the No. 2 quarterback race? "I wouldn't say put some distance, but his play speaks for itself," head coach Brad Childress said. "He's played very well the last couple of weeks." As for McMahon, Childress said: "I don't think you necessarily take the numbers for what they were. However, you have to (protect) the football. You'd rather throw it up in the stands than throw it to them."

Judd Zulgad, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings QB J.T. O'Sullivan will not play Saturday, Aug. 19, because head coach Brad Childress wants to go with his three quarterbacks. QB Brad Johnson will start and will be followed by QB Tarvaris Jackson and QB Mike McMahon. Asked what this might mean for O'Sullivan in the third preseason game next Friday, Aug. 25, against Baltimore, Childress was noncommittal.
Thu, 17 Aug 2006 18:19:08 -0700
Judd Zulgad and Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings rookie QB Tarvaris Jackson will play with the second-team offense during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19, despite being listed as fourth on the depth chart. Head coach Brad Childress said Thursday, Aug. 17, that Jackson will enter the game after QB Brad Johnson and the other starters play a quarter and a half. Jackson will play into the second half before being replaced by QB Mike McMahon. So is Jackson officially going to be moved to No. 2 on the depth chart, replacing McMahon? "He's No. 2, against Pittsburgh," Childress said. "Remember me saying to you guys that you have to evaluate quarterbacks with different people, different protection, and different receivers. I'm just attempting to see all the pieces." McMahon isn't concerning himself with the competition for the No. 2 job.

Jackson will finish the second quarter and play all of the third period before yielding to QB J.T. O'Sullivan. Thu, 10 Aug 2006 23:19:16 -0700
Kevin Seifert, of the Star-Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson is adjusting to the NFL faster than expected. He led the No. 2 offense down the field twice during practice Thursday, Aug. 10, and showed more poise than expected. Despite QB Mike McMahon's inconsistency, Jackson is not likely to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job. However, he appears to not be the long-term project he once appeared to be.
Fri, 28 Jul 2006 05:55:39 -0700
Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said he would give QB J.T. O'Sullivan every chance to compete for the backup quarterback job against QB Mike McMahon. Childress even mentioned he could keep four quarterbacks, although that's highly unlikely.
Mon, 24 Jul 2006 08:48:48 -0700
Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports the Minnesota Vikings appear to be weak at backup quarterback. If starting QB Brad Johnson, who is 38, goes down with an injury, No. 2 QB Mike McMahon is the best available option. However, McMahon is only 3-11 as a starter in his career and has been known to make mistakes. Also on the roster are QBs J.T. O'Sullivan and Tarvaris Jackson, both of whom have never completed a pass in the NFL.

Kevin Seifert, writing for the Sporting News, reports the battle for the Minnesota Vikings No. 2 quarterback spot may not be a done deal. QB Mike McMahon isn't a lock to back up starting QB Brad Johnson. QB J.T. O'Sullivan has experience in the West Coast offense and could challenge the error-prone McMahon.

WCCO.com reports Minnesota Vikings backup QB Mike McMahon is settling in as the team's No. 2 QB. He comes from the Philadelphia Eagles, where there seemed to be a different vibe, he said. "The difference I've noticed so far from Philly is that it seems a little more team oriented, and I just can't wait to see what happens once we get to training camp," McMahon said. McMahon knows Vikings head coach Brad Childress from Philadelphia. "He's a no nonsense guy, very detailed," McMahon said. "He's gonna be here first thing in the morning, last one to leave. Real hard worker, family guy, wants no off the field problems, so I don't think we'll be seeing any of those at all." McMahon's job is to be ready to play, but maybe more important when you're a veteran backup quarterback it's to make sure that those around you are ready to play. In this case, that means mentoring rookie QB Tarvaris Jackson.

Vikings head coach Brad Childress is considered one of the league's better developers of quarterbacks. With QB Brad Johnson as the starter and QB Mike McMahon as the backup, Jackson won't need to start any time soon, barring injuries. Jackson said he thought he had a "slight chance" of being picked Saturday, April 29. "I really didn't expect to go," Jackson said. "I knew (the Vikings) were interested in me, but I didn't know it would come in the second round. I'm excited to get up there and get started."
