Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the Kansas City Chiefs continue to show an interest in free agent WR Derrick Mayes. He is asking that Kansas City guarantee his contract for the balance of the season and the team is balking at that request.

The Kansas City Chiefs official site reports head coach Dick Vermeil has spoken to WR Derrick Mayes and stated bringing him in would depend on WR Derrick Alexander (Achilles) and his health status. At this point bringing him in is not expected as Alexander has been upgraded to probable.

SportsLine.com's Jay Glazer reports the Kansas City Chiefs are showing some interest in signing WR Derrick Mayes. They cut him in the pre-season. They will contact him to see how he is doing mentally and physically. They Chiefs are thin at WR. Rookie WR Marvin Minnis is likely out for this weekend as the effects of the head trauma lingers. Coach Dick Vermeil indicated that WR Derrick Alexander will try to practice Wednesday but will not start unless he is 100 percent. The team could move TE Mikhael Ricks back to WR. Team sources said Mayes was originally released because he did not fit into the high-speed vertical game the Chiefs have tried to pattern after the Rams attack.

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs rookie WR Marvin Minnis took most of the snaps with the first unit in practice. He could start not only Friday's final pre-season game at St. Louis, but also against the Raiders on opening day. Minnis replaced Derrick Mayes as the starter at split end early in practice Monday. Mayes returned to the lineup while WR Derrick Alexander sat out the latter portion of practice because of a sore Achilles' tendon. Coach Dick Vermeil said to keep the starting job Minnis had to do ""The same thing I saw out of him last Thursday night -- just keep getting better, and when the ball comes to him, catch it."

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs rookie WR Marvin Minnis received some more work with the first team during Saturday's practice. He could start instead of Derrick Mayes against the Rams in this week's pre-season game. Coach Dick Vermeil said he hadn't decided on a starter but did indicate he was impressed with Minnis' progress. Mayes may start against Oakland in the season opener. There is also some speculation Mayes might not be around for week one. Some of the team's options for the WR spot do not include Mayes.

Mark Maske reports for the Washington Post the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Washington Redskins tonight, 20-0. Redskins QB Todd Husak completed 3 of 10 passes for 27 yards and an interception. The Redskins had two first downs and 32 yards of total offense in the first half. For the Chiefs, QB Trent Green hit WR Derrick Mayes with a 29-yard TD pass. Dante Hall returned a punt 92-yards for the Chiefs other TD. PK Todd Peterson kicked a 23-yard FG to open the scoring for the Chiefs. PK Lawrence Tynes's 22-yard FG completed the scoring for Kansas City.

The Kansas City Chiefs official training camp site reports the team did not practice today, but rather they held their final walkthrough for tomorrow's pre-season game. WR Derrick Mayes took snaps with the first team offense along side Derrick Alexander. Players did not wear pads or helmets, only jerseys and hats.

Updaing an earlier story, the Capital Journal reports Kansas City Chiefs WR Marvin Minnis was limping noticably and wearing an air cast on his injured leg on Friday after he turned an ankle in Thursday's evening practice. Coach Dick Vermeil said he will be back in a "couple of days" and that the injury is not serious. The team's other starting WR, Derrick Alexander, missed a second straight day with a strained Achilles' tendon. WRs Derrick Mayes and Chris Thomas took most of the reps in their place.

DTs Dan Williams (foot), Terdell Sands (foot) and Thomas Washington (back) and S Brad Trout (head) did not practice.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs will use training camp to square away their WR position. Derrick Alexander and Derrick Mayes are the only two proven WRs on the roster. Their other top four receivers on the first day of training camp have combined for zero NFL starts and 39 receptions. Losing projected starter Sylvester Morris for the season after he injured a knee during an off-season workout last month did not help the cause. The Chiefs began training camp with Alexander and Mayes as the starters, rookie Marvin Minnis and Chris Thomas as second team and Tony Horne and Larry Parker as the third unit.

Mayes worked out for the team earlier this month and was in excellent shape. His weight was down from 205 pounds to 194 pounds.

SportsLine.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the initial indication is that Chiefs WR Sylvester Morris suffered major damage to his right knee yesterday. There's a chance he could miss the entire 2001 season. It is believed that he tore his ACL and possibly also damaged his PCL. A torn ACL alone would be enough to keep him out for the upcoming year. Dr. James Andrews is expected to examine Morris. Chiefs officials inquired about WR Derrick Mayes, who was cut earlier this year by the Seahawks, earlier this week but have yet to schedule a meeting with him.

Mike Sando reports for the Tacoma News Tribune that the Seattle Seahawks have begun preliminary discussions with QB Elvis Grbac, which they did in between wining and dining free agent DT Ted Washington. According to Grbac's agents, both the Seahawks and Ravens have inquired about his services. Washington enjoyed his visit with the team and passed a team physical. As reported, he's off to Cincinnati on Monday. By releasing WRs Derrick Mayes and Sean Dawkins on Thursday, the team saved about $600,000 and $2.5 million, respectively, against the salary cap. The team is about $8 million under the cap at this time.

Bill Williamson reports in the Post Crescent that the contract WR Derrick Mayes signed with the Packers was the one-year, $429,000 tender offer. Signing the contract may not be the end of the Mayes story as he has fallen behind WRs Bill Schroeder and Corey Bradford on the team's depth chart and he will now be battling Jahine Arnold for the team's #5 WR spot. Reportedly, Mayes has been the subject of trade rumors. Pittsburgh, Seattle and the New York Jets may have an interest in Mayes. He possibly could be cut if he isn't traded. Mayes trade value may be a fifth or sixth-round pick in a future draft.
