Sat, 25 Jun 2005 20:04:43 -0700 10TV.com reports former NFL LB Chris Spielman has resigned as head coach of the Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League. Coming off a 2-14 season, Spielman was asked to fire defensive coordinator Ron Selesky. Spielman did not agree with the move and chose to resign instead.
Sun, 29 Apr 2001 20:25:45 -0700 Leo Roth of the Democrat and Chronicle reports for the USA Today Buffalo Bills rookie MLB Brandon Spoon is drawing comparisons to former Bills LB Chris Spielman. "(Spoon), he has that short haircut, he's built like him, and he's so intense when you talk to him. There's not much kidding that goes on," said Bills scout Buddy Nix. Right now Spoon is looking to make the Bills roster in any way, as a special teams performer or as a backup to John Holecek in the middle of Buffalo's new 4-3 scheme.
Sun, 27 Jun 1999 15:35:00 -0700 Mark Craig reports in The Repository that Browns MLB Chris Spielman showed recently that he still has the competitive fires burning inside of him. He was upset when Browns President Carmen Policy had warned not to expect more than five to seven victories in 1999, while Dwight Clark, the team's director of football operations, said the team isn't out to impress anybody in 1999. Spielman walked into the cafeteria at the team's headquarters and demanded, "Am I wasting my time here?" Spielman along with several other veteran feel the Browns have a playoff-caliber team right now. Team officials love the attitude though as Policy said, "we need that kind of attitude if we are to reach beyond what we think can be achieved by an expansion team."
Sat, 12 Jun 1999 19:05:00 -0700 Patrick McManamon of the Akron Beacon Journal reports that two Browns to keep an eye on are S Marlon Forbes and rookie WR Darrin Chiaverini. Forbes, who is currently the team's starting strong safety, knows the Browns defense well because he played under defensive coordinator Bob Slowik in Chicago last year. Forbes has looked strong in the team's minicamps so far. As far as Chiaverini goes, "he could be our fourth receiver, but I don't want to underestimate him," Browns coach Chris Palmer said. "He is one of those guys where the ball finds him, and he will be a factor." As with Forbes, much more will be known when the pads go on -- will he still go over the middle with LB Chris Spielman ready to level him? -- but he's been as impressive as any rookie to date.
Mon, 10 May 1999 20:15:00 -0700 The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the rookies look this way on the current depth chart, Tim Couch is the #2 QB behind Ty Detmer, WR Kevin Johnson is #2 at split end behind Jermaine Ross, LB Rahim Abdullah is #2 at strongside linebacker behind John Thierry. CB Daylon McCutcheon is #3 at right cornerback behind Antonio Langham and Raymond Jackson, Marquis Smith is #3 at strong safety behind Marlon Forbes and Gerome Williams, Wali Rainer is #2 at middle linebacker behind Chris Spielman, WR Darrin Chiaverini is #5 at flanker, Marcus Spriggs is #3 at defensive left tackle, Kendall Ogle is #4 at weakside linebacker, James Dearth is #4 at TE and Madre Hill is #6 at RB.
Tue, 16 Feb 1999 15:20:00 -0800 The Bills have completed (finally) their trade with Cleveland sending Chris Spielman to the Browns for past considerations. What those "past considerations" are is anybody's guess since they are a new team!
Tue, 16 Feb 1999 13:20:00 -0800 Media sources in Cleveland are saying the Bills will receive no immediate compensation for Chris Spielman. Future considerations will be given based on if Spielman starts for the Browns, and is healthy as he did have neck surgery a year and a half ago. There is a press conference scheduled for 5:30 PM ET this afternoon.
Tue, 16 Feb 1999 12:30:00 -0800 Empire Sports Network reports the Buffalo Bills have indeed traded LB Chris Spielman to the Cleveland Browns for a 6th round draft selection.
Tue, 16 Feb 1999 01:40:00 -0800 ESPN reports the Browns and Bills have completed a trade for LB Chris Spielman where the Browns would give up a late-round pick in exchange for Spielman. The Beacon Journal reports that Spielman and Bills GM John Butler told reporters in Buffalo the trade was not final, though it could be soon.
Mon, 15 Feb 1999 17:55:00 -0800 The only way the Browns will trade for Bills LB Chris Spielman is if the Bills restructure his contract first. As it stands now, Spielman's contract is a big liability against the cap. San Diego is also said to be interested in Spielman.
