Bears | Sauerbrun Speaks Out

Thu, 15 Jul 1999 01:05:00 -0700

In a recent discussion with the Chicago Tribune, Bears' punter Todd Sauerbrun gave his thoughts on the Bears. He believes the team will be able to become better, but it's going to take a lot of work. The most important item to Sauerbrun appears to be having the Bears offense less predictable. "We've been so conservative, so predictable," Sauerbrun says, "that Jeff (Jaeger) and I would stand on the sideline calling the whole game, 'Here comes the draw. Third and short, here comes the lead draw.' We were too afraid to do anything that might make something happen." "I wouldn't hesitate for a second," he stated on benching QB Erik Kramer in favor of rookie QB Cade McNown. "You put the best guy out there, that's it, I don't care if you're there 38 years. We're here to win games, not to be politicians and play favorites. . . . Honestly, I see Cade playing. He makes plays. He's an athlete and that's the biggest thing.

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bear QB Erik Kramer (shoulder) is still not participating 100 percent in the team's mini-camps but it's because he's not completely healthy yet. "I don't want to do anything that would set me back," said Kramer. "There's a fine line between rehab and rest ... I don't feel very far away at all." Kramer still believes he'll be back at 100 percent by training camp.

Bears | Not Interested in Detmer

Sat, 20 Feb 1999 00:05:00 -0800

According to reports in the Daily Southtown the Bears are no longer interested in trading for QB Ty Detmer and will wait until June 1st to pick up a QB if Erik Kramer has not fully recovered from his injuries. The Bears believe that with this year's draft being so QB rich that going after a QB through free agency or trade would be a mistake. The Bears hope they can get one more good year out of Kramer before handing the ball over to their soon to be young franchise QB. The Bears also plan to have four QBs at camp this year, Moses Moreno, Erik Kramer, Jim Miller and the soon to be franchise QB. QB Steve Stenstrom will not be re-signed. Earlier reports from Chicago had indicated Detmer trade talks had been initiated so we'll have to see how this plays out.

Bears | Looking at Detmer

Thu, 18 Feb 1999 21:35:00 -0800

The Chicago Tribune reports the Bears have indeed entered trade discussions for 49ers QB Ty Detmer. The 49ers are looking for OL help and draft picks. The 49ers would love to recoup the second round pick they traded away last year. The article says the Bears have given OL Andy Heck the ability to negotiate a trade and it appears the 49ers are on his list. Neither Detmer's agent or the Bears would comment. The Bears are somewhat concerned about current starting QB Erik Kramer's age and recent injuries. He also carries a big salary.
