Thu, 07 Feb 2013 06:39:32 -0800

San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell was denied an opportunity to interview for the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator position. It is the second year in a row 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh denied permission for Donatell to leave the team for a defensive coordinator job. Donatell understands, however, that there is a system in place to prevent a position coach an opportunity for a promotion with another organization. "It's fair because I signed that contract," Donatell said. "I had a choice not to. You look at every year and make that decision."

According to Pete Dougherty, of PackersNews.com, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Ed Donatell could be making some changes to the defense. DE Cletidus Hunt, who came out during Sunday's, Oct. 19, game against the St. Louis Rams when the defense went into the dime package, could continue to do so in the future. Donatell said he wants to rotate his linemen in order to keep them as fresh as possible in the second half. Hunt, who had been the inside rusher in the dime for the team's first six games, is also nursing a sore leg. "We want to spread the work around a little bit," Donatell said. "(Hunt) played some on third down (against the Rams) but not much. We just want to spread it around, and that's been a formula that's worked for us."

He refused to put any blame on the shoddy sod that came up in huge chunks at Ericsson Stadium. "Anytime you lose a quality player who's very dedicated and having a great year and being productive for you, it's a setback," defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said. Coach Mike Sherman was searching the waiver wire Monday for help. The team may turn to its own reserves for help. Tod McBride could move up to nickel back with rookie Bhawoh Jue, Allen Rossum, or Chris Akins or any combination replacing him in the dime. The Packers might move strong S Darren Sharper around on some passing downs, Donatell said.

Packers | Pass Rusher A Priority

Wed, 17 Jan 2001 20:36:01 -0800

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers will be out to upgrade their pass rush via free agency or the NFL draft. Unless they can improve their draft position or make some drastic moves to create room under the salary cap the Packers may still not have the dominant pass rusher in 2001 that coach Mike Sherman covets. The team is also hoping Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila can improve at defensive end, although he is still considered a project. If they can't improve the rush they will continue to need to rely on defensive coordinator Ed Donatell's blitzing schemes.
