Kevin Goheen, of the Cincinnati Post, reports Cincinnati Bengals TE Derek Smith (ankle) had to be carted off the field during Wednesday, Aug. 6, morning's practice with a twisted left ankle. Smith did not participate in the evening session but was able to walk without the use of crutches. There was no word on when he would return.

The Miami Herald reports Miami Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said offensive line, tight end and linebacker are probably the team's biggest draft needs. Among the guards the Dolphins have scouted are Terrence Metcalf of Mississippi, Eric Heitmann of Stanford, Victor Rogers of Colorado, Martin Bibla of Miami and Richard Williams of Gardner-Webb. At TE, the team has looked at Doug Jolley of Brigham Young and Derek Smith of Kentucky. They are also doing extensive research on Washington's Jerramy Stevens, who had some off-the-field issues.

According to ESPN, Kentucky junior TE Derek Smith will leave school early and declare himself eligible for April's NFL Draft. Smith, who caught 36 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns last season, announced Monday he will bypass his senior season for pro football.
