The Detroit Lions could elect to part with TE Tony Scheffler is they need more salary cap space, although there is no indication this has been considered. OT Jeff Backus also could be an attractive candidate to cut for salary-cap reasons.

Detroit Lions OT Jeff Backus may be more willing to return next season since C Dominic Raiola restructured his contract and is expected to return. Backus is considering retirement this offseson.

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he is cautiously optimistic LT Jeff Backus and PK Jason Hanson will return in 2013.

Detroit Lions DE Kyle Vanden Bosch is likely to be a salary cap casualty this offseason. OG Rob Sims is the only secure starter on the offensive line, and OT Gosder Cherilus will become a free agent. OT Jeff Backus has a year left on his contract, but the team isn't rushing to make a decision on him. OG Riley Reiff will start somewhere in 2013. OT Jason Fox, if he's re-signed, should see a good shot to play at tackle next season.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said there is no timetable for when OT Jeff Backus needs to make a decision about his future. He said Backus has earned the right to take his time.

Detroit Lions OT Jeff Backus (hamstring), S Louis Delmas (knee), DT Nick Fairley (quadriceps), CB Chris Houston (ankle), CB Jacob Lacey (foot, Achilles') and DT Corey Williams (knee) are questionable for Week 14. Delmas and Williams did not practice Friday, Dec. 7, while the others were limited.
