During free agency, the Texans lost LB Mario Williams to the Buffalo Bills, OG Mike Brisiel to the Oakland Raiders, CB Jason Allen to the Cincinnati Bengals and TE Joel Dreessen to the Denver Broncos. They traded LB DeMeco Ryans to the Philadelphia Eagles. The team also waived OT Eric Winston, FB Lawrence Vickers and QB Matt Leinart to get under the salary cap. Winston then signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and Vickers with the Dallas Cowboys. "Obviously, it's been a difficult 10 days," Kubiak said. "We've lost some key players who are tremendous people and leaders. They played a big part in our building process. "It doesn't bother me," Kubiak said. "We're going to put 46 guys out there and play as hard as we can play. Other than that, I've got no comment on it." Most of the complaints about cut blocking come from defensive linemen who are usually the victims. The Texans will not change the way they play, including that key component of their running game that opponents loathe. "It's just part of what we do," Kubiak said about cut blocking. "We think to be good at running the football, you've got to do the little things in the run game, especially on the back side that create space for your players."

Jones has been competing with WR Kevin Walter for the No. 2 wide receiver job. Since I have a coach, and I haven't made any decisions to replace my coach, I'm not even thinking about anybody else." McNair added, "I think the coaches have done a good job. We don't have the record I hoped we'd have, and that's disappointing. I know Gary's disappointed, too." He touches it, and good things happen. But at the same time, you can make five big plays and one turnover can get you beat. Steve understands that."
Sun, 04 Oct 2009 22:09:05 -0700 Nick Scurfield, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was discouraged by the team's running game Week 4. The Texans topped 100 yards rushing for the second straight week, but they averaged only 2.9 yards per carry. Kubiak said, "Our big (running) plays came with their nickel defense on the field. Were we going to play him at defensive end? He's been able to hold his weight. Being the size he is gives him an opportunity to roam around and do those types of things and spy on quarterbacks. "We knew Kevin was a fine football player last year. His numbers are going to end up being bigger this year and that's a credit to his work, and probably the attention [WR Andre Johnson] gets and the way we run the ball has a lot to do with that. But Kevin's been a fine player, and as I said the other day, I think the key thing is there's another level for him. I think he's going to only get better," Kubiak said.

"Obviously it's illegal to go low on the quarterback and we have three plays that we're going to turn into the league and we'll wait to hear back," Kubiak said. "But he definitely was down there low and Matt took some tough shots."
Mon, 27 Oct 2008 20:54:00 -0700 John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans CB Dunta Robinson will not start in the team's Week 9 game, but he is getting closer to returning to the starting lineup. "Obviously, it was a great boost to my confidence just to have (Kubiak) come out and say that early on. So I could, as I did last year, kind of take the reins of this team and move forward and take that next step to get to that 10, 11, 12-win season, get to the playoffs, just raise the standard around here."

"I think on the offensive side of the ball, we ran the ball better last week, but we didn't run the ball good enough. We've got to create some cracks for No. 30 [RB Ahman Green], and (there's) none tougher to try to do that (against) than this group (the Cowboys).
