KFFL has learned OG Brenden Stai has filed for reinstatement with the league from the New England Patriots Reserve/Retired list. If he clears the procedural recall waivers, the Patriots would most likely release him from the list.

Updating previous reports, Kevin Mannix, of the Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was caught off guard by the sudden retirement of Patriots OG Brenden Stai, who abruptly retired Sunday, August 10, two weeks after signing a contract with the team. "That definitely took me by surprise,'' Belichick said. "I didn't see it coming. Brenden just said it was a personal decision he had made about football. That's all the light I can shed on the situation."

The New England Patriots have announced OG Brenden Stai has informed the Patriots of his intention to retire from football. Stai, 31, joined the Patriots as a veteran free agent on July 28 during the first week of the 2003 training camp. Stai, an eight-year veteran, had started 96 of 105 games during his career with four different teams - Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Detroit and Washington.

"He'll certainly get an opportunity to play," head coach Bill Belichick said. "He's been with several teams in the league and has started a number of games. Stai should be able to play once the pain subsides. Stai didn't rule out trying to play Sunday against Green Bay, but barring a surprising recovery in the next few days, he'll probably sit out.

Stai said he is suffering from patella tendinitis in his left knee. Stai said he underwent an MRI exam yesterday and did not immediately know when he would be able to play. "It's nothing where I have to have surgery, I don't think . . . [but] there's no way I could go out there and play right now," said Stai. There is a possibility the team could move OL Wilbert Brown to right guard.

Tom Kowalski reports for mlive.com the Detroit Lions added players during the first day of the NFL Draft that will QB Charlie Batch something he needs - protection from oncoming pass-rushers. The Lions addressed their offensive line problems Saturday by using their first two picks in the NFL draft on that position (OT Jeff Backus of Michigan and C Dominic Raiola of Nebraska). "We solidified a position that needed to be solidified. We said right from the start that we had to address the offensive line," said Lions president Matt Millen. It's possible that Backus will start at left tackle, Aaron Gibson will move to left guard, Raiola will be the center with Brenden Stai and Stockar McDougle playing right guard and tackle, respectively. The Lions did discuss moving down before selecting Backus.
