Updating previous reports, Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (shoulder) said his throwing is not back to 100 percent yet. He said his shoulder feels almost full strength and his swing has returned with no problems.

The Washington Nationals are almost certain to pass on free-agent 1B Prince Fielder (Brewers) at his current price, according to a baseball source. Washington will not give him a 10-year, $240 million contract similar to what the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim gave 1B Albert Pujols. Some Nationals executives are also concerned with Fielder's weight. If Fielder doesn't lower his demands, 1B Adam LaRoche will be the starting first baseman, with OF Mark DeRosa backing him up.

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo confirmed Friday, Dec. 23, that 1B Adam LaRoche will open the season as the team's starting first baseman in 2012. "That's correct," Rizzo responded when asked.

The Washington Nationals are considering OF Jayson Werth for center field. It would enable them to put OF Bryce Harper in right, OF Mike Morse in left and 1B Adam LaRoche at first base.

Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (shoulder) is 100 percent healthy. The team is currently looking for a right-handed hitting first baseman to platoon with LaRoche to keep him healthy.
