Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman will remain the everyday third baseman in 2014, but he will also move across the diamond and spend some time at first base. He'll take grounders at first in spring training, and it's a possible transition for a permanent position switch down the road. He could spell 1B Adam LaRoche against tough left-handed pitchers for 10 to 15 games in the season. "If that's best for the team, I'm willing to play over there," Zimmerman said. "I don't want to play 60 games over there. The way I played at the end of last season and the way my arm felt, I think third base is my best position and it gives our team the best chance to win. I feel like I'm the best third baseman that we have." Manager Matt Williams doesn't want Zimmerman playing first out of fear that his previous throwing woes will continue, but rather to give the club more versatility.

Washington Nationals OF Scott Hairston was taking groundballs at first base Friday, Aug. 9, as a way to make himself more versatile. Hairston has never played first base in his career. "Maybe it'll lengthen my career," he said. Hairston could become a right-handed option at first base next season. 2B Steve Lombardozzi was also taking grounders at first Friday with the team lacking a real righty hitting option at the position to spell 1B Adam LaRoche. LaRoche is hitting only .184 with a .552 OPS against southpaws this year. 1B Tyler Moore is 13-for-40 with four home runs in his last 10 games at Triple-A Syracuse, but manager Davey Johnson said Moore won't return to the team until September, when rosters expand.

Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche said he's underweight and is drinking protein shakes to try to gain some weight down the stretch. LaRoche has been around 200 pounds, around 10 or 15 pounds under what he would like to play at. He takes Ritalin to combat his ADD, and it causes him to lose weight during the season. "That medicine just makes it hard to eat," LaRoche said. "It hurts your appetite. Nothing tastes real good. Just kind of got to force it down. If you're not careful, you'll look up a month later and be dropping some weight."
Fantasy Tip: Perhaps that's one of the reasons why LaRoche is having a down year compared to last season. He still has 16 home runs, though, and he typically performs better in the second half.
