Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (rest) was out of the starting lineup Monday, April 14, against the Miami Marlins for the first time this season.
Fantasy Tip: There is nothing wrong with LaRoche, as it was just a day off against a left-handed starter. Daily fantasy owners can plug him back in the active lineup Tuesday.

Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) may have to spend more time at first base, because he is dealing with an arthritic right shoulder. "It gives him problems, and sometimes it's tough on him. So we've started to do some things at first base with him, where we can give him a break sometimes," manager Matt Williams said. Zimmerman already has two throwing errors this year, and his shoulder has been a problem for the last two years.
Fantasy Tip: A DL trip doesn't seem imminent. However, it could mean Zimm is rested more often. This also can't be good for Adam LaRoche's playing time, as Williams may look to sit his first baseman more against tough lefties and move Zimmerman across the diamond. The real benefactor here could be Danny Espinosa, who would need to play second base on days that Zimmerman is moved to first, with Anthony Rendon shifting to third.

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams plans to use OF Nate McLouth in right field and the leadoff spot Friday, Feb. 28, in the first Grapefruit League spring game against the New York Mets with 2B Danny Espinosa in the two-hole. 3B Ryan Zimmerman will bat third, 1B Adam LaRoche will bat cleanup and SS Ian Desmond will bat fifth. C Wilson Ramos will bat sixth with OF Tyler Moore serving as the designated hitter, OF Scott Hairston batting eighth and playing left field, and OF Michael Taylor batting last and playing in center field.

Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman said he's confident that he can return to being an elite third baseman now that he's regained full strength in his right arm and was able to have a normal offseason working out. Zimmerman is fine shifting over to first base for 10 to 15 games this year to spell 1B Adam LaRoche against tough left-handers. Zimmerman has yet to take balls at first base, and the transition could be slow.

Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (elbow) said Monday, Feb. 17, that he expects to be ready for the start of the regular season. He had surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow after last season. "So far, so good," LaRoche said. "It gets a little sore from time to time, especially when I start to throw and hit a little more."

Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche dropped down to 190 pounds last summer, and he thinks it was a result of his ADD medication. He entered this offseason wanting to gain 15 to 20 pounds, but his elbow surgery in October prevented him from doing much work this winter. LaRoche said he has about five more pounds to gain.

Washington Nationals 1B Tyler Moore feels as though he needs to compete to earn a spot on the active roster this spring after he struggled for most of the 2013 season and was sent to the minors. 1B Adam LaRoche is the starter at first base and 3B Ryan Zimmerman is expected to receive repetitions at first base, as well. Moore could be left as more of a pinch hitter off the bench.

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (elbow), OF Bryce Harper (knee) and 1B Adam LaRoche (elbow) are all recovering nicely this offseason after undergoing surgeries in October. Strasburg was pitching "a good amount" of the year with pain in his right elbow before having a procedure to remove bone chips from his right elbow. Strasburg's rehab is "going phenomenal." Harper has started his rehab and is expected to be a full-go for spring training. LaRoche has also started his rehab and has been doing follow-up exams for his elbow.

Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman will remain the everyday third baseman in 2014, but he will also move across the diamond and spend some time at first base. He'll take grounders at first in spring training, and it's a possible transition for a permanent position switch down the road. He could spell 1B Adam LaRoche against tough left-handed pitchers for 10 to 15 games in the season. "If that's best for the team, I'm willing to play over there," Zimmerman said. "I don't want to play 60 games over there. The way I played at the end of last season and the way my arm felt, I think third base is my best position and it gives our team the best chance to win. I feel like I'm the best third baseman that we have." Manager Matt Williams doesn't want Zimmerman playing first out of fear that his previous throwing woes will continue, but rather to give the club more versatility.
