San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said there is some concern that QB Colin Kaepernick could become too big, and too strong, as he does his offseason workouts. Harbaugh would prefer he worked on his speed and quickness. "If you're just talking about weightlifting and upper-body strength, yes, I think there is that fear," Harbaugh said. "It's something we've talked about. 'I don't want you getting too jacked-up, Colin.' I want some speed, quickness, not just (flexing chest his muscles)."

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Randy Moss conveyed his frustration about his role this past season, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. "In a competitive way, yes," Harbaugh said. "He wants to be involved. We've talked about it many times, suggestions he would make. It's all been positive. It's all been good." Harbaugh would not say if Moss will return to the team in 2013. "I don't know about that," Harbaugh said. "Next question."

San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell was denied an opportunity to interview for the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator position. It is the second year in a row 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh denied permission for Donatell to leave the team for a defensive coordinator job. Donatell understands, however, that there is a system in place to prevent a position coach an opportunity for a promotion with another organization. "It's fair because I signed that contract," Donatell said. "I had a choice not to. You look at every year and make that decision."

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday, Feb. 5, that he has great respect for QB Alex Smith, but indicated that the team owes him no special favors when it comes to where he's playing next season. Smith wants to return to a starting role, and the team could give him a fresh start by trading or releasing him; however, Harbaugh said that would be a business decision, not a personal one. "I don't think any player has those wishes granted when they're under contract," Harbaugh said when asked whether Smith had earned additional consideration. "And everything's different and every scenario is unique. Certainly something that we're not going to delve into and get into specifics at this point."

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh criticized the officials for what he believed was a pivotal non-call in the final minutes of Super Bowl XLVII. Officials determined Baltimore Ravens CB Jimmy Smith's contact with WR Michael Crabtree was incidental, but Harbaugh insisted a penalty should have been called. "I really want to handle this with class and grace, and we had several opportunities in this game," said Harbaugh. "We didn't play our best game, and the Ravens made a lot of plays and battled back. They competed to win. But there's no question in my mind that there was a pass interference - and then a hold on Crabtree on the last one." Harbaugh would later criticize the officiating again during his postgame news conference. "I realize I'm on the side of the 49ers," Harbaugh said. "I'm the coach of the 49ers - there is some bias there. But I wouldn't be bringing it up unless it was obvious. But that's not the way (the refs) saw it. That's the only reason I bring it up."
