He also could play on special teams. He is now third on the depth chart, behind rookie and probable starter Michael Bennett and Doug Chapman. Prentice is happy. "It's a great opportunity to be on a winning team," Prentice said. "I'm just optimistic. Now I'm on a team that's experienced at winning. Last year with the Browns, a team that's losing, players getting hurt... Now with the Vikings I'm just ready to come here and contribute as much as I can." QB Spergon Wynn will be the Vikings third-string QB behind starter Daunte Culpepper and backup Todd Bouman.

Zac Jackson reports for the Cleveland Browns official site coach Butch Davis said not to read too much into the first cut at the team's depth chart. Some first look facts: WR Kevin Johnson is listed as a fourth-team wide receiver because of a hamstring injury. He finally returned to practice on Monday. The coach said Johnson went about 65% in practice. Lenzie Jackson and Quincy Morgan are listed as the starting WRs. James Jackson and Travis Prentice are listed as co-starting RBs and Kelly Holcomb and Ty Detmer as co-backup QBs.

Browns | Prentice Gets the Start and Struggles

Sat, 04 Aug 2001 19:51:50 -0700

According to Patrick McManamon of the Akron Beacon Journal, Cleveland Browns RB Travis Prentice started today's scrimmage with Buffalo. He did not distinguish himself, as he ran for eight yards on four carries. He did not look as quick to the hole as the other backs. One problem for him was he was working behind an offensive line that still is suspect.

Browns | Running Back Notes

Mon, 18 Jun 2001 09:15:50 -0700

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Cleveland Browns director of football operations Dwight Clark said the team doesn't appear to have a dominate running back right now. RBs Errict Rhett, Travis Prentice, James Jackson and Jamel White are all trying to stick out and become the team's featured back. If none do, the committee approach is expected. Clark said he likes the way Jackson talks and runs low to the ground, so he'll be rooting for him. He feels Prentice has become bigger and stronger and noted Rhett, who's not 100% recovered from a foot injury, showed some flashes of old.

Rookie James Jackson added an element of speed according to Davis.

Browns | Running Back Situation Up in the Air

Mon, 30 Apr 2001 15:20:23 -0700

ClevelandBrowns.com reports the Cleveland Browns running back situation for the upcoming season remains a bit cloudy now that RB Curtis Enis has retired. RB Errict Rhett has the most experience but is returning from an injury he suffered last year while RBs Travis Prentice and Jamel White showed flashes of talent last year. The team also can throw RB James Jackson, a rookie, into the mix this year, too.

Browns | RB Needs To Catch

Sun, 29 Apr 2001 14:00:07 -0700

Tony Grossi reports for the Plain Dealer a key ingredient for the RB that will start for the Cleveland Browns in offensive coordinator Bruce Arians' scheme is the ability to catch the ball. Sixty catches a season out of Arians' starting back might be the norm. That is one reason the team reportedly prefered Deuce McAllister over LaDainian Tomlinson in the NFL Draft. It may be another factor in them not pursuing Bengals free agent RB Corey Dillon. Dillon has averaged only 26 catches a year for the Bengals. One back who fits the mold they are seeking is Ricky Watters who averages 51 catches a season. If no running back is added, the contenders for the starting position in training camp will be Errict Rhett, Travis Prentice and rookie James Jackson. Prentice did have 37 catches last season. Rhett's career high is 24.

Browns | Mini-camp Notes | One Signed

Wed, 11 Apr 2001 18:23:07 -0700

Zac Jackson reports for the team's official site the Cleveland Browns wrapped up their three-day mini-camp earlier today. RB Jamel White continues to earn the praise of coach Butch Davis. In this week's mini-camp, he's been returning kicks, running the ball and catching passes. Davis singled out several defensive players after today's practice sessions: DT Darius Holland, CB Lewis Sanders, DT Mark Smith, DT Marcus Spriggs and LB Dwayne Rudd. Davis reiterated his pleasure with CB Corey Fuller's coverage skills and RB Travis Prentice's hands. The team signed street free agent LB Michael Smith. He was a three-year starter under Davis at the University of Miami. He blew out his knee in 1999, but appears fully recovered.

Browns | Team Notes

Wed, 11 Apr 2001 09:38:54 -0700

The Beacon Journal reports Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis is happy with the play of CB Corey Fuller, calling him "one of the best cover corners in the NFL." Davis was also happy with the catching abilities of WR Darrin Chiaverini and RB Travis Prentice. RB Errict Rhett continues his rehab from his foot injury. The Browns hope, but aren't sure, that he'll be ready for the June mini-camp. "This isn't a football injury," Rhett said at yesterday's minicamp. "It's a falling-off-a-horse-injury, a car-accident injury." If he's healthy, the team might feel a little more comfortable going to training camp with a group of Rhett, Curtis Enis, Travis Prentice and mini-camp standout Jamel White. If Rhett is not healthy, they may need to add to the position via free agency or the NFL Draft.

Browns | More On Mini-camp

Sun, 08 Apr 2001 12:45:47 -0700

Bill Rabinowitz reports for the Columbus Dispatch this week's Cleveland Browns mini-camp could help the team determine to what degree they need help at a certain position. "I don't know that it will have 100 percent impact, but it is definitely a factor," coach Butch Davis said. Davis declined to say which players have the most at stake this week, but it's likely that the team's RBs (Travis Prentice and Curtis Enis in particular), WRs (Kevin Johnson, JaJuan Dawson and Dennis Northcutt), safeties (Marquis Smith, Percy Ellsworth and Earl Little), CBs (Corey Fuller, Daylon McCutcheon and Lewis Sanders) and interior linemen on both offense and defense will get the most attention. Mini-camp will be run without pads so it is more difficult to judge the play of the linemen.

Browns | Still Thinking On RB

Sat, 17 Feb 2001 10:18:48 -0800

The Beacon Journal reports, as a follow up to an ongoing storyline, the Cleveland Browns continue to look closely at their RB situation. Last year's starter for the first five games before he was injured, Errict Rhett, is doing great in his rehab according to director of football operations Dwight Clark. The problem is he won't have the screws out of his foot until March and then he won't practice for at least a month after that. Last year's other key RB, Travis Prentice fits more of a role as a third-down back. That leaves the Browns pondering the free agent market. As previously reported there is some interest in Charlie Garner, but also some doubts he can be the every down back they are looking for. The NFL Draft may not get them the RB they seek either. Where does it all lead? To deciding on whether or not to go after the Bengals Corey Dillon. We'll all know the answer by March 2.

Browns | Various Notes

Mon, 12 Feb 2001 01:14:53 -0800

Jeff Schudel reports for the News Herald Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis is looking forward to the NFL Scouting Combine in two weeks. Davis knows a lot of the players who will be there from his days at the University of Miami. In one of the least surprising moves of the off-season, the Browns said they do not plan to "tag" any of their own free agents. Browns offensive coordinator Bruce Arians says he has known RB Deuce McAllister since the RB was in the 10th grade. When asked about the Deuce being his everydown back Arians hedged some on his answer. VP Dwight Clark said he thinks RB Travis Prentice, would be an "excellent" third-down back. Is the team seeing a McAllister - Prentice combo in its' future?
