John Mullin reports for the Sporting News the Chicago Bears are hoping to replace G Todd Perry, who left for Miami, with Rex Tucker. Another possibility could be to move Jerry Wisne from tackle back to guard. After letting RB Curtis Enis depart and tendering RB James Allen only a one-year deal, the team may be thinking of taking a RB in the first round of the NFL Draft. LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Bennett and Deuce McAllister are three backs the Bears like, but they may be hesitant to take a RB in the first round for the third time in seven years, especially with their bad fortunes with RBs Rashaan Salaam and Enis.

Green Bay Packers RB Basil Mitchell will serve as Dorsey Levens' backup. The Rashaan Salaam signing is more for next year, he will not play this Sunday against Arizona. De'Mond Parker tore both his ACL & MCL. Next year is in doubt and more than likely will be put on the physically unable to perform list to start the season, meaning he cannot play in the first six regular season games. Wide Receiver Antonio Freeman has not practiced, he has the flu. Corey Bradford returned to practice on Wednesday after missing practice due to a death in his family. Defensive end Vaughn Booker (pneumonia), linebacker Anthony Davis (hamstring), right tackle Earl Dotson (back) and left tackle Ross Verba (knee) have not practiced. Keith McKenzie's days as a Packer appear to be coming to a close. He has rejected an offer that will pay him about $3 million a year. That would make him the highest paid non-starter in NFL history. He wants about $4 million a year and to be a starter. As it appears that Vaughn Booker would be unable to play Sunday, the team has said Cledius Hunt will start instead of Keith McKenzie. The Packers refuse to comment regarding that move.

The Oakland Tribune reports that although recently signed RB Rashaan Salaam may not be the final answer for the Raiders at RB and that even though the potential addition of RB Lawrence Phillips may not be the answer as well, at least the team is looking hard to fix one of their highest off-season needs- improve the running game. In fact, upgrading and diversifying the backfield may be the most significant off-season challenge for coach Jon Gruden and his staff. According to the Tribune, finding complimentary players to RB Napoleon Kaufman and not replacing him is what the Raiders are attempting to do. They need someone to get the tough inside yards, particularly in short yardage situatons. If Salaam can return to his earlier form, where he was a 1,000 yard rusher, he could be the inside force the Raiders need. The Raiders reportedly have not ruled out signing Phillips but the article specualtes that signing him would fly in the face of everything that coach Gruden has done in terms of collective character-building. Maybe Phillips has made an effort to clean up his act. Then again, every team would like to see a lot more to be convinced. We'll have to see how this plays out in the future.
