San Diego Padres minor league 2B Bobby Hill has been named to the USA Olympic qualifying roster, according to Amanda Branam of Sandiego.Padres.MLB.com. Hill, currently with Triple-A Portland, will be in the 2006 COPABE Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Cuba, from Friday, Aug. 25 through Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Updating previous items, Padres.MLB.com's Lyle Spencer reports San Diego Padres 2B Josh Barfield should be part of a second-base-by-committee approach with veteran infielders Bobby Hill, Geoff Blum and Eric Young until he's ready to take over full time. The team recently traded away previous starting 2B Mark Loretta to the Boston Red Sox to help make room for Barfield.

Updating a previous item, Padres.MLB.com's Lyle Spencer reports recently acquired San Diego Padres IF Bobby Hill (Pirates) is a 27-year-old switch-hitter who hit .269 with six doubles, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored in 58 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005. He's considered a patient hitter and has speed. Defensively, he brings a strong arm and good glove to the infield, and has played second and third base.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Paul Meyer reports Pittsburgh Pirates IF Bobby Hill got a rare start June 21, his first one since May 4, when he played at third base against the Washington Nationals. "I want Bobby to stay sharp, and I haven't done a good job of keeping him sharp," Pirates MAN Lloyd McClendon said. "Giving him four at-bats in a game I think will pay dividends, particularly with the game on the line and having him pinch-hitting late in the game."
