Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (thumb) started working out in Cincinnati Monday, July 21, taking a step forward in his recovery. "He was able to throw. Obviously, he was not able to catch the ball," manager Bryan Price said. "And he's doing some movement with his hand a lot more comfortably. It's still on schedule but still a ways away."

Fantasy Tip: Phillips was expected to miss a minimum of six weeks, and he has only been sidelined 10 days, so he will be on the mend at least another month before he nears a return to game action.

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (thumb) is expected to miss six weeks, the team announced Thursday, July 10. He will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb Friday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: Phillips is worth stashing in a disabled list slot in all formats. Outside of NL-only leagues, he isn't worth using a bench space on, if your disabled list slots are filled with superior players. Skip Schumaker gains NL-only value while Phillips is out.

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (thumb) has a ligament tear in his left thumb, and he will have surgery Friday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: To put the recovery timetable in perspective, Bryce Harper missed 57 games and almost two months with a torn ligament. Phillips' season could be over. Skip Schumaker and Ramon Santiago will see additional playing time. Schumaker is an option in NL-only leagues.

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (thumb) was wearing a brace on his left thumb after leaving the game Wednesday, July 9. Manager Bryan Price was upbeat about the injury. "We'll do due diligence to get much more depth on the injury," Price said. "It can be more significant than we believe it is and hope it is as this point in time. But right now, the initial signs are it's not a brutal injury and we can have him back sooner than later."
