The Miami Marlins are comfortable RP Jon Rauch will be better as a setup man than closer. Batters hit just .209 off him as a member of the New York Mets last season. "His stuff is still good and he knows the division well," president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said.

New York Mets OF Scott Hairston, RP Jon Rauch, RP Ramon Ramirez, SS Ronny Cedeno, C Kelly Shoppach, RP Tim Byrdak and SP Chris Young all became free agents on Saturday, Nov. 3. A club source mentioned Hairston as the free agent the Mets most want to keep, but the outfielder is coming off a career season (20 homers and 57 RBIs) and figures to command a huge raise from the $1.1 million he received in 2012.

Mets | Optimistic they'll keep David Wright

The New York Mets are optimistic that they will come to terms on a long-term contract extension for 3B David Wright this winter. Wright has made it clear that he wants his next contract to take him to retirement, and he would also like to see the team add payroll through trades and free-agent signings in the near future. RPs Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez and OF Andres Torres are expected to depart this offseason. SP R.A. Dickey has a $5 million option for next year, but it's clear he'll be seeking a hefty contract extension, too.

New York Mets RP Jon Rauch locked down the save against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, Aug. 12, after RP Josh Edgin hit a batter and walked two and RP Frank Francisco issued two more walks and a few runs. Francisco was working on back-to-back days for the first time since returning from the disabled list Aug. 3, and he said he was tired. "They wore me out a little bit. I'm a little out of shape," the closer said. "I just got tired. ... It's my first time back-to-back since when? A long time. But we got a 'W.' That's the important thing."
