Washington Nationals pitching coach Steve McCatty said the team has discussed the possibility of RP Rafael Soriano coming in for four-out saves this year, although he never pitched for more than three outs in a save situation last season.

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano struggled in his appearance Monday, March 10, allowing five runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in one inning. He has given up seven runs on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings this spring. His body language on Monday didn't look upbeat, and a scout said his fastball sat between 89 and 91 mph, which was close to his average from 2013. Manager Matt Williams isn't concerned.
Fantasy Tip: However, since these are tendencies Soriano displayed at times last season, fantasy owners should pay attention. His K/9 drop pointed to potential problems in the future. If he can't turn things around when regulation play starts, we could see more doses of Tyler Clippard and/or Drew Storen in save spots. Plan accordingly in your draft and be careful not to overpay for Soriano.

Washington Nationals RP Tyler Clippard could become the team's closer over the final month of the season with Rafael Soriano struggling, according to manager Davey Johnson. "I could," he said. "We'll see how it shakes out going forward."

Washington Nationals RPs Rafael Soriano, Tyler Clippard and Craig Stammen are unavailable Friday, Aug. 23. RP Drew Storen will close if a save situation arises.
Fantasy Tip: Don't run out and add Storen. Soriano will likely be back to active duty tomorrow night.

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano has blown a career-high six saves and has converted 32 of his 38 chances. "I've been leaving pitches up," Soriano said. "Keep working on it. I haven't had a stretch like this in my career. Things happen for a reason." Soriano's walk rate is down to 2.2 walks per nine innings compared to 3.2 per nine during his 43-save season for the New York Yankees last year. But his strikeout rate has fallen from 9.2 K's per nine to 6.9.
Fantasy Tip: Despite his recent struggles, Davey Johnson hasn't indicated he's close to making any kind of switch in the ninth. The team has quickly fallen out of contention, too. If anyone were to take over, it'd probably be Tyler Clippard, but he's not worth stashing just yet.

The Washington Nationals recalled RP Drew Storen from Triple-A Syracuse Thursday, Aug. 15, and optioned RP Ryan Mattheus in a corresponding move. Storen was sent down July 27 when he was 3-2 with two saves and a 5.95 ERA in 47 games. He was 0-0 with a 5.68 ERA in six games with Syracuse and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his last three outings on the farm.
Fantasy Tip: Storen will likely be returned to some sort of setup role. He has very little chance of seeing save opportunities for the rest of the season unless there is an injury to Rafael Soriano, who has been solid all year long.

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano was pulled from what started as a non-save situation by acting manager Randy Knorr, who was filling in for the ejected Davey Johnson. Soriano had already given up two runs and left two runners on base. RP Ian Krol blew the save, leaving Soriano charged with four earned runs allowed, but wound up with the win when the Nats won it in the ninth.
Fantasy Tip: The article mentions Knorr's disappointment that Soriano wasn't as intense during the non-save spot as he is during his opportunities to untuck. Whatever the fallout from this, it won't matter for Soriano's job security; it's merely a black eye on his ERA..

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano (personal) is unavailable to pitch Monday, April 22, after his wife gave birth to the couple's child. RP Drew Storen will come on in a save situation, if it arises.
Fantasy Tip: Make sure to get Storen in your lineup for today if you own him in any deep leagues. Soriano should be back within the next day or two.

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said CL Rafael Soriano will go on paternity leave Monday, April 22, making him unavailable for one game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano is unlikely to pitch in a save situation Friday, April 12, after pitching in each of the last three games. Manager Davey Johnson had yet to talk to Soriano, but it appears he's leaning toward resting his closer Friday. RP Drew Storen is expected to get the nod if a save situation arises. Soriano didn't pitch much this spring, and he tossed 24 pitches last night and a total of 57 during the series with the Chicago White Sox.
Fantasy Tip: Make sure you get Storen in your lineups if you own him in deep mixed leagues or NL-onlys. The Nationals definitely don't want to overwork Soriano so early in the season, so bank on him not appearing in a save sitch tonight.
