Nationals | Rafael Soriano hopes to make playoff roster

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 16:15:32 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano will have his playoff fate decided in the next 10 days after RP Drew Storen has locked down the closer's role. Soriano is feeling more comfortable with his setup role and said he'd be ready for the playoffs after a few more games. Soriano preserved a four-run lead with a perfect ninth inning Thursday, Sept. 18. The team's final relief spot for the postseason will likely come down to Soriano and RPs Jerry Blevins, Xavier Cedeno and Blake Treinen. Manager Matt Williams still believes in Soriano.

Nationals | Drew Storen earning closing role?

Tue, 09 Sep 2014 10:19:54 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen has pitched very well the last couple days has been magnificent with RP Rafael Soriano temporarily demoted from the closer's role. Storen wrapped up a save by striking out all three batters he faced Monday, Sept. 8, after striking out two in a save opportunity Sunday, Sept. 7, in which he struck out two hitters. Manager Matt Williams won't give any clues about Storen claiming the closing job, but Storen has been great this year, with a 1.31 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 11 walks and just two home runs allowed in 48 innings pitched.

Storen is a new pitcher after imploding in the playoffs two years ago and being demoted to the minors. He developed a changeup late last year and has used it twice as often this season, on nearly 20 percent of his pitches. "Any time you can go to three different pitches in a two-strike count, that helps," Storen said. "Adding that changeup has been huge for me. I can throw it against righties and lefties. It's really paid off for me recently."

Nationals | Rafael Soriano working on mechanics

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 14:29:57 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano threw a bullpen session with the hopes of fixing his mechanics Monday, Sept. 8. Soriano was temporarily taken out of the closer's role last Friday. Manager Matt Williams was encouraged by the session and said Soriano is looking at film to find differences in his arm slot. Williams refuses to commit to an interim closer in the meantime, and he'll likely go with matchups late in games. Soriano is expected to get into a game soon, likely in a low leverage spot.

Nationals | Rafael Soriano to work on slider

Sat, 06 Sep 2014 12:06:03 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano has posted a 6.98 ERA and blown five saves in 21 appearances since the All-Star break, with opposing hitters batting .325 with a .917 OPS against him over that span. He lost his job as closer following a blown save against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, Sept. 5, and will not pitch for the remainder of the series. In an attempt to fix his mechanics, Soriano watched video of his performance after Friday's game and determined that he should focus on throwing his slider during a bullpen session Monday, Sept. 8. Scott Boras, Soriano's agent, suggested that his elbow was dropping too low whenever he threw that particular pitch, causing it to remain flat in the strike zone.
