The New York Mets plan to buy out SP Johan Santana's $25 million option for the 2014 season and pay him $5.5 million. There is a small chance the team will re-sign him to a modest deal. He missed the entire season while rehabbing from a surgery to fix a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. Santana is hoping to be ready for the start of spring training next year.

The New York Mets will consider re-signing impending free-agent SP Johan Santana on a small deal in the offseason, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. The team will buy out Santana's 2014 option for $5.5 million. He has made only 109 starts since being acquired in 2008.

New York Mets SP Johan Santana (shoulder) visited his teammates on Friday, June 14, at Citi Field. Manager Terry Collins reported that Santana's progress from surgery on April 2 is ahead of the schedule of his previous procedure at the same point. Regardless, the left-hander's stay with the Mets is essentially over, because the organization will spend the $5.5 million to buy out his 2014 option. Santana has resolved to return to the majors, but it's uncertain that he'll be able to pitch again.
Fantasy Tip: His days as a fantasy commodity are likely over, even if he does end up pitching for a major league club sometime next year.

New York Mets SP Johan Santana (shoulder) underwent left shoulder surgery Tuesday, April 2, for the second time in 31 months. The procedure was to fix a tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder, and he'll miss the entire season for the second time in the last three years. The Mets still owe Santana $31 million from his $137.5 million, six-year deal.
Fantasy Tip: This will be an extremely long and arduous rehab for Santana to come back a second time from the same injury. It's difficult for pitchers to come back from this procedure once, let alone twice. Don't expect him to be very productive if he does make it back at some point next season. Jeremy Hefner will now get a chance to prove he belongs in the team's starting rotation.

New York Mets SP Johan Santana (shoulder) is determined to make another comeback after re-tearing his shoulder capsule, according to a source familiar with his thinking. He is leaning toward having a second surgery to fix his arm, but he'll spend the weekend going over all of his options.
Fantasy Tip: It's tough enough as a pitcher to come back from this particular surgery the first time. Doing it twice is unprecedented. Don't expect Santana to be fantasy-useful if he can return from this.
