Cubs | John Lackey is hard-luck loser

Wed, 11 May 2016 21:26:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey allowed just one earned run, three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over eight innings in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, May 11, but he suffered the hard-luck loss.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey lacked run support from his normally dependable offense. At least he posted a strong stat line with plenty of whiffs against the National League's leading offense in strikeouts.

Cubs | Kyle Hendricks, John Lackey to start DH

Mon, 09 May 2016 21:15:06 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks will start the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, May 11, against the San Diego Padres, while SP John Lackey will start the second game of the day-night twin bill.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks and Lackey shifted around a bit due to the rainout Monday, but still get to face the Padres. San Diego leads the National League in strikeouts on offense, so both pitchers are fantastic fantasy options and DFS plays.

Cubs | John Lackey fans 11 Nationals

Fri, 06 May 2016 15:05:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters during the Cubs' 8-6 win over the Washington Nationals Friday, May 6, and he registered his fourth win of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey has been solid but unspectacular to start the season, but the 11 punchouts were impressive Friday. Expect him to continue chipping away at his ERA (currently 4.02) and padding the win column going forward. Lackey is a solid mid-rotation arm.

Cubs | John Lackey to start Sunday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 09:29:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey will start against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, May 1. He was originally scheduled to pitch Saturday, April 30, but the game was rained out.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey is 3-1 with a 4.97 ERA through four starts and has struck out 27 batters in 25 1/3 innings. He has a very favorable matchup against the Braves, who have scored the fewest runs in the National League and have the second-worst batting average in the senior circuit. Lackey will be followed in the rotation by SPs Jason Hammel, Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks.

Cubs | John Lackey punches out 11

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 23:32:26 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey allowed just four hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings while striking out 11 batters in a win Monday, April 18, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey pushed his record to 3-0 while lowering his ERA to 3.66. He has quality starts in each of his past two outings, but this was his most solid outing by far. As long as he keeps the ball in the park and limits his walks, he will have an outstanding season for his fantasy owners.

Cubs | John Lackey labors for win in desert

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 09:21:50 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey made it through six innings in his season debut Thursday, April 7, opposite the Arizona Diamondbacks, but surrendered six runs on eight hits, including two home runs. He also walked one and struck out four, en route to picking up the victory.

Fantasy Tip: If there's a silver lining here, the veteran right-hander did settle down after allowing runs in the first three innings, and made it long enough to escape with the ugly win. While it's more likely than not that he peaked during his tenure in St. Louis, Lackey is still capable of being a steady source for quality starts, wins and ERA.

Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | John Lackey signs with the Cubs

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 14:26:04 -0800

Free-agent SP John Lackey (Cardinals) signed a two-year contract between $32-$34 million with the Chicago Cubs, pending a physical, Friday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran enjoyed his first full season in the National League with a 2.77 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and a 7.2 K/9. Entering his age-37 season, though, expectations should be kept in check. Repeating his 2015 numbers will be difficult. Still, he relocates to an up-and-coming team, and as long as his ERA and WHIP don't jump too high, he has potential to see an uptick in wins. Lackey is a worthy option in the late middle rounds of seasonal drafts this spring.

Giants | SF confirming interest in John Lackey

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 12:08:52 -0800

Free-agent SP John Lackey (Cardinals) is drawing interest from the San Francisco Giants, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey may have parlayed his success last season into another contract of one or two years. He will be a decent selection in the middle rounds of most fantasy drafts, maybe even a little higher if he lands in the right situation.

MLB | Two teams looking at John Lackey

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 15:56:34 -0800

Free-agent SP John Lackey (Cardinals) is getting attention from the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: The St. Louis Cardinals have also chimed in but not to the extent these two teams might have interest. Lackey would be a decent option as long as the deal was less than two years. His decent postseason will give him a bump up on draft boards, at least to the middle rounds.
