Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | John Lackey signs with the Cubs

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 14:26:04 -0800

Free-agent SP John Lackey (Cardinals) signed a two-year contract between $32-$34 million with the Chicago Cubs, pending a physical, Friday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran enjoyed his first full season in the National League with a 2.77 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and a 7.2 K/9. Entering his age-37 season, though, expectations should be kept in check. Repeating his 2015 numbers will be difficult. Still, he relocates to an up-and-coming team, and as long as his ERA and WHIP don't jump too high, he has potential to see an uptick in wins. Lackey is a worthy option in the late middle rounds of seasonal drafts this spring.

Giants | SF confirming interest in John Lackey

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 12:08:52 -0800

Free-agent SP John Lackey (Cardinals) is drawing interest from the San Francisco Giants, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey may have parlayed his success last season into another contract of one or two years. He will be a decent selection in the middle rounds of most fantasy drafts, maybe even a little higher if he lands in the right situation.

MLB | Two teams looking at John Lackey

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 15:56:34 -0800

Free-agent SP John Lackey (Cardinals) is getting attention from the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: The St. Louis Cardinals have also chimed in but not to the extent these two teams might have interest. Lackey would be a decent option as long as the deal was less than two years. His decent postseason will give him a bump up on draft boards, at least to the middle rounds.

Cardinals | John Lackey set for free agency

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 14:36:55 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP John Lackey rejected the St. Louis Cardinals' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey posted a career-best 2.77 ERA in 2015, which is rare for a 36-year-old hurler, and he also maintained a respectable 1.21 WHIP and 7.2 K/9. Lackey's fantasy value for the 2016 campaign will largely depend on where Lackey signs during the offseason, so check back for updates. However, it is unlikely he repeats his 2015 numbers next season.

Cardinals | Jason Heyward, John Lackey land offer

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 08:55:26 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals impending free-agents OF Jason Heyward and SP John Lackey were extended one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offers Friday, Nov. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward will be an outfielder to target in the tier between the elite and midrange outfielders in drafts. Lackey is a solid midrange grab, but where he lands will have an impact on his fantasy value.

St. Louis Cardinals SP John Lackey allowed four earned runs, four hits and a walk in just three innings in a no-decision in Game 4 of the National League Division Series Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) killed FantasyScore owners in this final postseason start of the season, tossing just 49 pitches before giving way to the bullpen.

Cardinals | John Lackey starting on short rest

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 06:49:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP John Lackey will start Game 4 of the Division Series against the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, Oct. 13, on short rest.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) was dominant in Game 1, but the wind conditions made Wrigley Field a bandbox in Game 3. He's a high-end start with considerable risk on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | John Lackey solid on short rest

Sun, 11 Oct 2015 13:31:00 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP John Lackey is 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA in four postseason starts on short rest.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) may be called upon to rescue the Cardinals, who may face a 2-1 deficit following Game 3. Considering how well he fared in Game 1, it may be worth taking a flier on Lackey.

Cardinals | John Lackey wins Game 1

Fri, 09 Oct 2015 18:29:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP John Lackey allowed two hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of the National League Division Series Friday, Oct. 9. He walked one and struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) flirted with a no-hitter until Addison Russell led off the sixth inning with a single. Including his outings during the regular season, Lackey is 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA against the Cubs in four starts this year and makes a solid FantasyScore pitching option.
