The teams worked out the deal Tuesday, Feb. 3, but held off on completing it until New York opened a roster spot. The Yankees freed the roster spot by placing 3B Drew Henson on waivers Thursday, Feb. 5.

"I am pleased to announce that I will be pursuing a career with the NFL," Henson said in a statement. Henson, who was a sixth-round choice of the Houston Texans in the 2003 NFL draft, is due $2.2 million this year from the Yankees, plus $3.8 million for 2005 and $6 million for '06. These are the terms which remain from his six-year $17 million contract he signed in 2001.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Henson had not informed the Yankees that he is concentrating on football.
