The St. Louis Cardinals optioned P Victor Marte, C Bryan Anderson and INF Eugenio Velez to Triple-A Memphis Friday, March 30, in order to finalize their opening day 25-man roster. OFs Shane Robinson and Erik Komatsu earned bench spots. OF Allen Craig (knee), 2B Skip Schumaker (oblique) and SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder) will begin on the disabled list.

Updating a previous item, USA Today reports the exploratory shoulder surgery scheduled for Seattle Mariners pitcher Ryan Anderson (shoulder) turned into his third shoulder operation Wednesday to repair a torn labrum on his throwing arm. Anderson, who has not pitched since 2000, is expected to be out eight to 12 months. He had surgery for a torn labrum in 2002 and an operation for a torn rotator cuff in 2001.
