The Associated Press reports former Detroit Lions DL Robert Porcher has been sentenced to 50 hours of community service and one-year probation for an assault on his ex-wife, Kimberly Porcher. Porcher was ordered to have no contact with K. Porcher except through text messages or e-mails. He will also be required to pay $960 in fines/court costs and complete a domestic abuse program. Paul Rinaldi, Porcher's agent, was not available for comment.

NFL | Porcher to be sentenced

The Associated Press reports former Detroit Lions DL Robert Porcher will be sentenced on a charge that he assaulted his ex-wife. Porcher was arrested on the assault and battery charge in December of 2007. His charge is punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine. He pleaded no contest to the charge Wednesday, March 12, and his sentencing is set for Thursday, April 3.

Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports former Detroit Lions DE Robert Porcher was named chairman of the Detroit Metro Sports Commission on Monday. The organization was formed in 2001 and works to bring national and international amateur sports events to Metro Detroit.

Jay Clemons, of DetroitLions.com, reports Detroit Lions DL Robert Porcher, who announced his retirement Monday, Nov. 1, leaves the franchise as the Lions' all-time career sack leader (95.5). Porcher led the team in sacks eight different seasons (1993, 1996-01, 2003), making him the only Lion to accomplish this feat. The 35-year old South Carolina native has appeared in three Pro Bowls, registered double-digit sack totals in four consecutive years (1996-99) and was the only active NFL defensive end to be in double-digits from 1996-99 prior to his retirement.

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions DE Robert Porcher was a healthy scratch for the Lions in Week 1, leaving questions about his status with the team this year. The defensive coaches clearly haven't been happy with him; however Porcher's play during the preseason shouldn't be used as the gauge for what he can do. During his career, Porcher typically took it easy during the preseason to avoid wearing himself out.

Edwards was expected to do so in 2003, but hernia surgery slowed him and he never returned to full-speed. Edwards had additional surgery during the offseason, but it appears he's headed to complete health.

James Royer, of DetroitLions.com, reports that the Detroit Lions and DL Robert Porcher have mutually agreed to push back Porcher's scheduled roster bonus date in order to give him more time to contemplate his playing future. Porcher, a 12-year veteran, played in 14 games in 2003 and finished the season with 4.5 sacks for a loss of 23.5 yards. Currently, he is entering the final year of a contract that will pay him $6.8 million.

Larry Lage, of the Associated Press, reports Detroit Lions DE Robert Porcher criticized Arizona Cardinals RB Emmitt Smith for not retiring after last year's record-breaking season. "I think he's overstayed his welcome," Porcher said. "It doesn't make me feel sad. That's the problem most players have. Most players, especially great players, have a hard time saying 'Goodbye.' Most of us have been doing this since we were little kids." Porcher, who gave praise to former Lions RB Barry Sanders for leaving when so close to breaking the record, admitted that he too is nearing the end of his career.

Updating an earlier story, the Free Press reports DL Robert Porcher signed a two-year contract worth $7 million, including a $1-million signing bonus, to stay with the Detroit Lions. He provided the Lions an estimated $3.5-$4.5 million in additional cap room for the start of free agency Friday. Lions president Matt Millen said: "He is an invaluable member of this team, as proven by his abilities and attitude during the game, at practice, in the weight room, in meetings and in the locker room."
