Free-agent RP Bobby Jenks (back) is currently rehabbing from spinal fusion surgery, and he is hopeful of returning to the mound. Jenks also kicked an addiction to pain medication, and he has been clean and sober for almost 18 months. "Pain in my back got so bad that I tried to do all I could to stay on the field," Jenks said. "I took more and more pain pills. I tried to get off them, and I couldn't."

Free-agent RP Bobby Jenks (neck) continues to rehab from multiple back and neck surgeries and a bout of depression, but he remains open to a return to professional baseball. "Mentally, I'm still 100 percent in the game," Jenks said. "Even if (a return) is only for a year or two, knowing I got through everything and conquered this part of my life and finish how I want to finish ... ." Jenks developed an addiction to pain medication for his injuries, but he admits to being in much better shape mentally after becoming clean and sober.

The Boston Red Sox placed SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (neck) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, July 3. 1B Mauro Gomez and RP Justin Germano were both recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. The team also released RP Bobby Jenks.

The Boston Red Sox will investigate the situation surrounding RP Bobby Jenks' (back) emergency surgery in December to correct a failed procedure. Jenks said "there was an error" when he first had surgery to remove bone spurs from his spine Dec. 12. That surgery was done by Dr. Kirkham Wood. "The third one was started and not finished. So basically there was a serrated edge that sliced me open in two different spots and I was leaking spinal fluid," Jenks said.

Updating a previous item, Boston Red Sox RP Bobby Jenks (back) has lost around 30 to 40 pounds after having multiple emergency surgeries in the offseason. "Enough," Jenks said. "Basically from the middle of last season until December, I had nothing to do but work out, so that's all I did. I popped a movie on during the winter for the kids and would just sit behind the couch and ride the bike all day."
