Sun, 24 Jun 2007 14:39:02 -0700

Updating an earlier item, the Associated Press' Greg Beacham reports the death of former All-Star RP Rod Beck Saturday, June 23, has hit close to home for the San Francisco Giants. Beck pitched for the Giants for the first seven of his 13 big-league seasons, and was popular with teammates, reporters and fans. He also set the Giants' single-season save record with 48 saves in 1993. "He was a great teammate and a great competitor," said current Giants infielder and former teammate Rich Aurilia. "He left an impression on everybody he played with. You talk to everybody, they'll have nothing but good things to say. He's somebody that Giants fans will always remember." Giants owner Peter Magowan also spoke about Beck, stating "Everyone in the Giants organization is deeply saddened by the loss of a dear friend. Rod Beck was a true Giant in every sense of the word, from his dedication on the field to his selflessness away from the park." Beck had also been involved in a number of charities during his time in the Bay Area, including work with the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
