A team that talked to the Philadelphia Phillies said the only way they trade SPs Cole Hamels or Cliff Lee is if they don't pay any money and get a huge return, which is unlikely.

The Philadelphia Phillies do not plan to expose SP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to competition during the remainder of the 2013 season. The Phillies envision Gonzalez as the No. 3 pitcher in 2014 behind SP's Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Ethan Martin will be recalled to make his major league debut against the Atlanta Braves Friday, Aug. 2. SP Cliff Lee (neck) will miss his second straight start with neck stiffness. Martin was 11-5 with a 4.12 ERA in 21 starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year, and he was 4-2 with a 2.08 ERA in his last seven outings.
Fantasy Tip: Martin, 24, has a four-pitch repertoire but has had trouble locating those pitches for strikes; at Lehigh Valley, he had a 5.9 BB/9 rate. That won't serve him well if that continues in the big leagues, although he has plenty of upside and can be very tough to hit at times. For now, limit him to NL-only leagues.

Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said there is "very little chance" that SP Cliff Lee is traded before the deadline Wednesday, July 31. The Boston Red Sox are considered the most likely team to trade for him, and the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals are also interested. The BoSox are concerned about Lee's age, the money owed to him and the prospects they'd have to give up.

The Boston Red Sox might be interested in trading for Philadelphia Phillies 3B Michael Young as part of a package to acquire SP Cliff Lee. However, Young has a limited no-trade clause, and it's unclear if he'd approve a move to Boston.

The Boston Red Sox may be the only team still talking to the Philadelphia Phillies about SP Cliff Lee. The Red Sox could take on the $70 million left on Lee's deal, and Lee would likely approve a trade to Boston, even though they are on his limited no-trade list. However, the Phillies are believed to be asking for SP Brandon Workman and SS Xander Bogaerts, along with a big league-ready outfielder. One executive thinks there is "no chance" that Boston will part with Bogaerts in any package, though. "That's just unrealistic, to set that kind of price," the exec went on. "This guy (Lee) has so much money coming. I'd bet 27 teams wouldn't even claim him on waivers because they can't afford him. So the Red Sox have to be looking at the Phillies and thinking, 'What's your leverage?' It wouldn't surprise me if the Red Sox really want him. So would they give up one of their top prospects who's not Bogaerts? Maybe. But they're a team that's set up really well for the future. So they're not going to do anything out of desperation. Why would they?"
