Phillies | Cliff Lee denies ball doctoring

Sat, 04 May 2013 23:55:29 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee refuted claims from Toronto broadcaster Dirk Hayhurst that he doctors his pitches, a claim Hayhurst also made to Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz. "That's a completely inaccurate statement. I'll go get you my hat right now. I've been wearing the same hat for 3 years. It's sweat and rosin," Lee said.

Yankees | Kevin Youkilis picking up steam

Fri, 15 Mar 2013 10:56:20 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Kevin Youkilis hit a solo homer and a triple Thursday, March 14, a day after doubling off Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee. "He's starting to swing the bat good," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's driven a lot of balls the last few days, and that's what we want to see."

Fantasy Tip: Youk is hitting .263 with two homers in 19 spring at-bats. His long history of injuries will keep his price relatively low but, as a result, could make him an alluring bargain at a volatile position.

Phillies | Cliff Lee prone to long ball?

Thu, 07 Mar 2013 12:37:53 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee allowed two solo home runs Thursday, March 7, and he said he might be prone to giving up more home runs than other pitchers because he's constantly around the strike zone. "That comes along with throwing a lot of strikes usually," Lee said. "And that's what I'm trying to do. Occasionally, they'll be swing mode and run into a pitch if I leave it over the plate. That's what happens. I just have to make sure I do a better job of keeping the ball down, especially if I sense they are in swing mode." Only Oakland Athletics SP Bartolo Colon threw more strikes than Lee last season. Lee's 11.8 home run per fly ball rate last year was the highest mark for him in the last four years.

Phillies | Roy Halladay unlikely to start opening day

Tue, 19 Feb 2013 17:08:59 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Roy Halladay is not expected to be the team's opening day starter this year, as hitting coach Rich Dubee hinted the decision will likely come down to SPs Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee. "I think it's how we line up best," Dubee said. "Realistically, we could pitch anybody the first day as far as Doc, Cole and Cliff. On most staffs, they are No. 1 starters, so they all could pitch opening day. But part of what we're thinking is trying to split those two lefties. Last year we started with two lefties (after Halladay) and I'd just like to split them up." If Halladay doesn't start opening day, it would be the first time he didn't have the assignment since 2002.
