Phillies | Cliff Lee done for season

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 17:56:39 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) has been shut down for the remainder of the season, although he feels better now than he did earlier in the year.

Fantasy Tip: If the Phils had been in contention, there was a slight chance that Lee ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) could have returned as a reliever later this year. He could attempt to resume throwing during the winter, although there's also a strong possibility that he could retire.

Phillies | Cliff Lee won't have surgery

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 13:46:35 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) will once again try to rehab and avoid surgery, the team announced Monday, March 16. Lee has been shut down from throwing and has been placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: At age 36, it's hard to imagine Lee pitching through his condition and avoiding Tommy John surgery, which would likely end his career. His condition makes him one of the riskiest fantasy baseball players in 2015. Avoiding him like the plague in drafts is probably the smartest strategy.

Phillies | Cliff Lee still feeling pain

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:38:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) said he threw off a mound Wednesday, March 11, and continues to feel pain in his left elbow. Lee is hoping the pain subsides soon.

Fantasy Tip: If the pain doesn't subside soon, Lee's 2015 season, and possibly his career, could be in real jeopardy. The news that Lee is dealing with a torn ligament in his left elbow is troubling news for those in fantasy baseball drafts this week. The safest route would be to avoid Lee at all costs in the early rounds. He might be worth a late-round pick as a stash option if he can somehow pitch through the injury this year, but it seems unlikely for a pitcher of his age.

Phillies | Cliff Lee may need TJS

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 10:29:04 -0700

Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) would need his partially torn elbow tendon to be addressed by Tommy John surgery, if it comes to that, the team said.

Fantasy Tip: Lee will attempt to pitch through the flexor tendon tear to start the regular season, but it looks like the surgical route may be inevitable. Lee has said recently that surgery could force him to retire, as well. In any event, Lee is now extremely risky in the early rounds of drafts as a top-end starter. It may be in your best interests to avoid him entirely.

Phillies | Cliff Lee has tear in tendon

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 10:18:28 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) is dealing with a tear in the flexor tendon in his left elbow. He will attempt to throw for a short period of time, but if he doesn't improve, he'll likely need surgery.

Fantasy Tip: The Phillies aren't terribly optimistic that Lee can avoid a surgery that would keep him out for six to eight months and possibly force him to retire. Lee now becomes an extremely risky option as one of your top fantasy baseball pitchers, and he should probably be avoided at all costs, for now.

Phillies | Cliff Lee plays catch

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 09:39:47 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) played catch Tuesday, March 10, but there is no update on his MRI results. The team is expecting to update his condition later in the day.

Fantasy Tip: Lee's season and even career could be riding on these MRI results. Stay tuned later in the day for what the results hold. If Lee's MRI results are clean, there's a chance he could still be ready for opening day. In that case, if he's healthy entering the season, he should still be considered a fine option as a top-end fantasy starter.

Phillies | Cliff Lee discusses future

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 09:44:10 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) said surgery on his left elbow would end his 2015 season and possibly his career. "Basically, if I have the surgery, this season will be done, possibly my career, I guess," Lee said. "I don't know. We'll have to see."

Fantasy Tip: Lee is currently seeking a second opinion on his troublesome left elbow. You have to be pretty worried if your fantasy draft is upcoming. Keep a close eye on the news about his elbow. When healthy, even at age 36, Lee can deliver fantasy ace numbers.

Phillies | Cliff Lee has elbow discomfort

Sun, 08 Mar 2015 08:22:32 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) is feeling some discomfort in his elbow and underwent a precautionary MRI, which revealed little to no change in his elbow. The discomfort is coming from the same area he had problems with last season. Lee likely will resume throwing Monday, March 9, but will not make his next scheduled spring training game appearance. The Phillies will have Dr. James Andrews to look at the MRI for a second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to watch this situation to see if Lee will have to miss any additional time because of the elbow injury. Lee will be dropped down draft boards if the injury continues, but he could be seen as a No. 2 starting pitcher if the discomfort goes away.

Phillies | Cliff Lee feels normal in outing

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 15:23:59 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) made 22 pitches (16 strikes) in his spring debut Thursday, March 5, and he said his arm "feels normal." It was Lee's first time facing hitters since straining his left elbow in the second half of 2014. He threw all fastballs Thursday with the exception of a curve and two cutters, but he was confident in the way he felt.

Fantasy Tip: At age 36 and coming off elbow problems, Lee should no longer be relied on as a fantasy baseball ace. However, he'll probably come at an injury discount this year as a solid No. 2. Lee doesn't strike out hitters at the rate of the elite arms that will come off the board before him, but he doesn't walk many hitters, either, which counts for something. Also, he could be a heavy trade target if he proves his health early in the season. A move to a contending club would raise his value.

Phillies | Cliff Lee to start Thursday

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 10:46:27 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) will make his first Grapefruit League start against the Houston Astros Thursday, April 5. Lee will be participating in his first game action since July 31, and is slated to pitch two innings before being stretched out in subsequent starts.

Fantasy Tip: Lee has not experienced any setbacks this spring and his recovery from a strained elbow remains on schedule. A productive spring, combined with a strong start to the regular season, could make him one of the most likely players to be moved before the trade deadline. He projects to be a low-end No. 2 starter in mixed fantasy league drafts this season.
