The Associated Press reports former MLB OF Jose Canseco pleaded guilty Tuesday, Nov. 4, in federal court to a misdemeanor offense of trying to bring a fertility drug across the border from Mexico. He was sentenced to 12 months' unsupervised probation by U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruben B. Brooks. Canseco pleaded that he had gone to Mexico to obtain a substance to restore his testosterone levels in an attempt to reverse damage done to his body by his steroid use.

ESPN.com reports former MLB OF Jose Canseco, whose book "Juiced," focused attention on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, said he regrets writing the book and naming the names of alleged steroid users. Canseco said that he never realized that his book would impact and hurt so many people. "If I could meet with Mark McGwire and these players, I definitely would apologize to them," Canseco said, according to the New York Daily News. "They were my friends. I admired them. I respected them."

The formal charge was introduction into interstate commerce of a misbranded drug, which brings a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine. Canseco was released on his own recognizance and has a hearing set for Nov. 4.

Federal investigator Jeff Novitzky asked Canseco if he had sought money from Detroit Tigers OF Magglio Ordonez. Canseco denied seeking money from any players in connection with his two books. Last year it was reported that the agent for Ordonez had informed federal agents that Canseco had asked Ordonez to invest in a movie project in return for Ordonez not being vindicated in Canseco's book 'Vindicated.' Canseco has said this is the reason he hates Rodriguez and decided to include him in his new book, including allegations that he introduced the Yankees third baseman to a steroid dealer in the late 1990s. "I believe they had an affair," Canseco said during a book-signing at Bookends in Ridgewood, N.J. "I'm pretty sure of it. I spoke with Alex and he denied it, but the way he denied it, it wasn't reassuring. I spoke to my ex-wife last year about it and I'm not going to say she acknowledged that they did, but she did not say that they did not."

If A-Rod threatens to sue Canseco or goes on "60 Minutes" to attack his credibility, Canseco will respond with "Max," the Canadian steroid dealer he claims to have hooked A-Rod up with in the late 1990s. McNamee claimed that Clemens first raised the issue of steroids not long after McNamee saw him meeting with Canseco during the party. However, Clemens' side has turned over evidence to U.S. congressional investigators, including an affidavit from Canseco, stating that he wasn't present at Canseco's home that day. "It may be that he wasn't there for the whole time, but he was there at some point," said Richard Emery, one of McNamee's attorneys. "His kids were there, his wife was there, and he was there."

Authorities raided a pharmacy in Orlando and investigated another in Mobile, Ala. As a result, four officials from the companies have been arrested. Former baseball star Jose Canseco and his twin brother Ozzie lost an appeal of a $1 million judgment, Wednesday, Oct. 4, in a lawsuit filed by two men beaten by the ex-players in a Miami bar in 2001, according to the Associated Press. The brothers had appealed the amount, as well as the kinds of damages, and claimed the trial judge made errors in the case, but those claims were rejected by the 3rd District Court of Appeal judge. Testimony showed that the Cansecos had punched and shoved Alan Cheeks and Christian Presley; the appeals court said the actions came "without any provocation," although the brothers claim the fight began after Presley accosted Jose Canseco's date that night.

ESPN and The New York Daily News are reporting FBI sources have implicated former Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals 1B Mark McGwire for steroid use. The paper said an informant told them a California man named Curtis Wenzlaff injected McGwire on several occassions at a gym in Southern California. A former member of the gym where McGwire and Wenzlaff allegedly worked out together told the paper that he heard the two discuss steroids. Both McGwire and OF Jose Canseco have denied ever meeting Wenzlaff.

MLB | Leagues Warned On Steroids?

The New York Daily News reports an FBI agent says federal investigators warned Major League Baseball about 10 years ago that some of its players were using steroids, but baseball executives failed to act on the information. A special agent in Ann Arbor told baseball security chief Kevin Hallinan that Jose Canseco and other players were using illegal anabolic steroids.
