The Associated Press reports Texas Rangers P Justin Thompson will accept his minor-league assignment and will turn down a position with the team to serve as a pitching instructor. "I was dumbfounded when they made the offer, that they think that highly of me, but I still think I can pitch," said Thompson, the 35-year-old left-hander who was the first cut from major league camp this spring. "I'm going to try it in the minors and see how it goes. "It's nice to know I have that opportunity, but I really want to be able to look in the mirror and tell myself I did everything I could."

Thompson, who is attempting to make it back to the majors from four shoulder surgeries, has three options. He can go to the Rangers' minor-league camp and try to make it back, try to catch on with another team or retire and work in the Rangers organization as a pitching instructor.
