Cincinnati Reds RP Russ Springer (hip) is unavailable to pitch Friday, Aug. 6, because of a sore hip flexor muscle, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Springer was expected to see a doctor and undergo an MRI exam Friday. The team is unsure if he will have to go on the disabled list. If he does, the team could recall RP Aroldis Chapman from the minors or P Jared Burton.

Dejan Kovacevic, of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Pirates management has had productive talks with two free-agent RP's, Octavio Dotel and D.J. Carrasco, with Carrasco aimed at a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Management also is in deep talks with another free-agent right-handed reliever. Sources would divulge only that the type of contract being discussed is major league. Possibilities include RP's Jamey Wright, Kiko Calero, Brendan Donnelly, Seth McClung, Russ Springer and Chan Ho Park.
