Van Slyke was hitting .336 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs in the minors. He's the son of former OF Andy Van Slyke.

He appeared in the game and hit into a double play as a pinch hitter. Manager Don Mattingly said there is no timetable for Rivera to return to the field. "We can't throw him out there," Mattingly said. "He's got to be able to do some stuff before we can put him in the field. If it's another day-to-day, then we're starting to get into a few days down the road, see where we're at. We're hoping in a couple days."
