Wed, 01 May 2013 12:45:29 -0700 The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent OF Juan Rivera (Yankees) to a minor league deal Tuesday, April 30.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 12:30:30 -0700 The New York Yankees released OF Juan Rivera Thursday, March 28. Fantasy Tip: This means that the Yanks are comfortable with using Lyle Overbay at first base in the absence of Mark Teixeira (wrist) after auditioning him the past few days. He's worth a dart throw in deep AL leagues if you need first base or corner infield depth in the short term.
Tue, 26 Mar 2013 09:46:37 -0700 The New York Yankees prefer to leave 3B Kevin Youkilis at third base with 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) out. OF Juan Rivera will see the majority of playing time at first base, but the Yanks also have 1B Dan Johnson and are considering options outside the organization. Fantasy Tip: Rivera becomes an option for AL leagues since he should see pretty consistent playing time. However, it'll be short-lived when Mark Teixeira (wrist) and Curtis Granderson (forearm) return from their injuries. At that point, he'll be competing for PT with Vernon Wells as the fourth outfielder.
Sun, 24 Mar 2013 20:33:16 -0700 The New York Yankees have had internal discussions about Boston Red Sox 1B Lyle Overbay, and how he might fit. Their scouts are split on how effective he can be, but he could be platooned with OF Juan Rivera if added.
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 11:13:11 -0700 New York Yankees OF Ben Francisco hit a two-run double Wednesday, March 13, and singled Thursday, March 14. "You'll probably see a lot of him in the next two weeks," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's got an opportunity." OF Matt Diaz probably is behind in the battle for one of the last roster spots. OF Juan Rivera remains in the mix for at-bats at first base and outfield. Fantasy Tip: Those in AL-only leagues should take a shot on Francisco, who's 10-for-26 in spring action, boasts some pop and should serve as a platoon bat for a club battling a few injuries. He and Rivera could each have a month or so of semi-regular plate appearances, and one of them has the chance for more match-up work even when the starting lineup gets healthy.
Wed, 06 Mar 2013 20:48:48 -0800 New York Yankees OF Juan Rivera played first base with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, but general manager Brian Cashman sees him more as an outfielder. "I don't look at him as a first baseman. I know he played first with the Dodgers, but in fairness, we have to evaluate everything," Cashman said Wednesday, March 6. "If I have our people tell me it's logical, legitimate one to look at, then I'll be comfortable looking at it."
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 15:25:20 -0800 New York Yankees OF Juan Rivera and 1B Dan Johnson are possible replacements at first base while 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) heals.
Mon, 25 Feb 2013 10:34:02 -0800 New York Yankees OFs Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera will see more playing time in the outfield with OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) out until May with a broken forearm. OFs Zoilo Almonte, Melky Mesa and Adonis Garcia could also figure into the mix. INF Eduardo Nunez will not be used in the outfield, according to general manager Brian Cashman. The injury to Granderson likely cements OF Brett Gardner as the starting center fielder.
Fri, 08 Feb 2013 15:13:08 -0800 New York Yankees OFs Juan Rivera and Matt Diaz are able to opt out of their minor league deals at the end of spring training because of a clause in the new collective bargaining agreement. As a result, general manager Brian Cashman said both players are all-or-nothing options, meaning they'll either make the major league roster, or they won't be on the team. 1B Dan Johnson can also opt out at some point, but it's not at the end of camp. Johnson is likely to open the year at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
Wed, 30 Jan 2013 12:52:54 -0800 The New York Yankees are interested in signing free-agent DH Travis Hafner (Indians) to a one-year, incentive-laden major league deal for him to serve as their designated hitter against mostly right-handed pitchers. Hafner could also play some first base. INF Eduardo Nunez and OFs Matt Diaz, Russ Canzler and Juan Rivera could also platoon at the DH spot.
