The Canadian Press reports Toronto Argonauts head coach Mike Clemons said RB Ricky Williams will play roughly a quarter Friday night, June 2, in the team's first exhibition game. Veteran RB John Avery is expected to get the start at tailback, meaning Williams should come into the game either midway through the first half or sometime early in the second half. "I would like to see his total game," Clemons said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how physical a back he is in a game situation." Clemons isn't concerned Williams will play despite having taken half the training camp snaps that his teammates have had. Williams will only have four practices with the team before the game.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports the Minnesota Vikings won't offer a qualifying tender to RB John Avery, who was slated to be a restricted free agent. Thus, Avery will become an unrestricted free agent when the market opens March 3.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice implied RB John Avery could be in some trouble with the inevitable return of WR Nick Davis. Davis is a solid returner, and they haven't been overwhelmed by Avery's work on kickoff returns. He's been average, at best.

Updating a previous story, Vikings.com reports the Minnesota Vikings signed free agent RB/KR John Avery. Terms of the deal were undisclosed. Avery has played twenty-three NFL games with the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos. He also played a season in the XFL and spent last season in the CFL with Edmonton, advancing to the Grey Cup title game.

The Sun Times reports a source said the Chicago Bears have discussed adding RB John Avery. He has played in the NFL, CFL and XFL. He led Edmonton to the Grey Cup last season in the CFL. He led the league in rushing, averaging 6.3 yards per carry, and was also the top kick returner. Reportedly, Jacksonville is one of about five other teams interested.

The Dallas Morning News reports although the Dallas Cowboys did not announce their roster cuts, the affected players know who they are. RB John Avery, WR Damon Hodge and DT Ben Williams were among the players with experience who did not make the final roster. S Sean Key, WR Anthony Lucas, rookie RB Tony Taylor, rookie LB Lewis Mackey and rookie DL Colston Weatherington, a seventh-round draft pick were also cut. The Dallas News reports players who find themselves in jeopardy of not making the team include running back John Avery, who missed his third straight preseason game with a hamstring injury. Also in jeopardy is Safety Sean Key who was pancaked on a play yesterday by Jaguars QB Mark Brunell, which resulted in 49-yard TD run by Stacey Mack. TE Johnny Huggins, who has failed to captivate coaches with his deep snapping, may be on his way out also.

RB John Avery (hamstring) did not play again last night. He will likely make the roster because the Cowboys can afford to take a chance on him, but the intrigue is waning. WR Reggie Swinton continued to impress with a 40-yard reception and is seemingly on the verge of coming from nowhere and locking down a roster spot. S Lynn Scott is playing very well. Only negative from last night was his shoulder injury. TE James Whalen continued to catch everything thrown his way.

According to the Denver Post, Denver Broncos TE Shannon Sharpe wants to return to the Broncos next year and will try his best to make it happen. "Everybody knows that I want to be back here," Sharpe said. "But if it doesn't work out, it's not a knock on Mike (coach Mike Shanahan) or me or anybody else. That's just the way things happen sometimes." In other news, CB Dale Carter (knee) missed practice again yesterday and will be a game time decision. The Broncos have named Chris Miller, RB John Avery and DE Cyron Brown inactive for this weekend's game. They also placed LT Tony Jones (triceps) on injured reserve and signed DB Jason Suttle from the practice squad.
