Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis is using a new stride since having hip surgery, and although he only made it through an inning Monday, March 3, he's happy with where he is. "I knew it was going to be a little bit of an issue, even in the bullpen sessions, that my stride is so much longer having so much more range in my right hip," Lewis said. "I'm just going to have to have more reps to find a release point." He was hitting 87 to 89 mph on the radar gun, and his slider had some "bite."

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) was encouraged by his one-inning outing in an intrasquad game Tuesday, Feb. 25. He commanded his fastball well, mixed in some sliders with bite and hit 87 to 89 mph on the radar gun, something he wasn't able to do last year during his rehab assignments. His delivery was fluid and pitching coach Mike Maddux said Lewis had "more drive" as he used his legs more.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) is pain-free this spring and his delivery is free and easy following hip surgery. "I feel like I have drive off the back side," Lewis said. "It's kind of different feeling that I can work on feeling pressure on my back side and my leg. My mechanics, I feel like, are a lot better now. Being so short and it takes less pressure off my elbow. I think I was continuing to have elbow problems because I was throwing across my body because the hip was hurting so badly. I don't have those issues right now."

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) is attempting to become the first player to return from hip resurfacing surgery and pitch at the major league level. He hasn't pitched since July of 2012, but he is healthy in spring training and working to win a spot in the rotation. "I think he has a track record and the reports we're getting is that he's ready to come in here and compete and he's going to get that opportunity to compete," manager Ron Washington said. "And I certainly wouldn't count Colby out."

Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux said SP Colby Lewis (hip) looked free and easy during a video clip of Lewis' throwing session in California recently. Lewis is unlikely to be ready to enter the season in the starting rotation. "Great things from Colby," Maddux said. "Of course he's going to be on a little different program (in spring training) because the surgery and the procedure he had nobody else has had it. We're going to have to listen to him and really get with the medical team. We're in unchartered waters right now but if anybody's going to find their way to shore it's Colby Lewis."
