Rangers | Josh Hamilton undergoes surgery

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 15:25:01 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee) had surgery Wednesday, June 8, and the procedure included reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. It's hard to imagine Hamilton returning this year, in the opinion of The Dallas Morning News' Gerry Fraley.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton should be left to the waiver wire in all fantasy formats at this point with an uphill battle to return this year and possibly even next given his extensive injury history. Texas has plenty of options for the corner outfield spots, too, in Hamilton's absence.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton expects to play in 2017

Tue, 24 May 2016 09:13:23 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee), who is out for the season, is expected to be back on the field for the 2017 season, which is the final year of his five-year, $125 million deal. Hamilton has just 170 plate appearances and has eight home runs since he returned to the Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to imagine the former MVP having an everyday role moving forward with Texas if he can make it back next season. The 35-year-old is an extreme injury risk and would probably only be worth a late-round flier in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton out for season

Mon, 23 May 2016 14:50:01 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee) got a second opinion on his knee. He's set to have surgery on June 8, and will be out for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers weren't really expecting anything from their former MVP winner anyway, and luckily for them, they're not the ones paying for most of his massive salary. It's an ominous sign for the 35-year-old Hamilton, who could be nearing the end of his career as he continues to have trouble staying on the field. Ryan Rua and Drew Stubbs will continue to benefit the most in his absence.

Rangers | Drew Stubbs signed

Sat, 07 May 2016 10:50:22 -0700

The Texas Rangers have signed free-agent OF Drew Stubbs (Braves) to a major-league contract. He is expected to serve as a reserve outfielder even though OF Delino DeShields Jr. has struggled at the plate this season. In corresponding moves, P Alex Claudio was optioned to Class AAA Round Rock and OF Josh Hamilton (knee) was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain how much playing time Stubbs will receive but he is not worth rostering outside of AL-only fantasy leagues. The 31-year-old hit .237 with a home run and three RBI in 38 at-bats for Atlanta earlier this year.

Rangers | No timetable for Josh Hamilton

Thu, 05 May 2016 12:14:12 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee) is working out in Texas but hasn't started baseball activities. There is no timetable for his return, and he will not restart his rehab assignment Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Ho hum. Hamilton's injuries history is extensive, and he's not close to returning to the Rangers at all. He'll likely be in some sort of platoon role if he does play at all this year, and his fantasy value is extremely limited to basically AL-only leagues. Let someone else stash him.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton restarting rehab

Mon, 02 May 2016 16:46:26 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee) will sit out until at least Friday, May 6, before restarting his rehab assignment so that the 20-day "clock" can be reset. Hamilton felt weakness and pain in the back of his left knee over the weekend and received a cortisone shot. General manager Jon Daniels said the team has no expectations for Hamilton to return to full health.

Fantasy Tip: So basically the aging Hamilton will never be at 100% with his knee again in his career, and he's fighting an uphill battle to return to regular playing time for the Rangers this year. The fact that Texas has other options (Ian Desmond, Nomar Mazar, Shin-Soo Choo) at the corner outfield spots also means the Rangers have no reason to rush him back. Only keep Hamilton stashed in the deepest of mixed leagues and AL-only formats. Don't expect much from him from here on out.
