Tue, 23 Apr 2013 16:45:20 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde will be recalled from the minors Wednesday, April 24, and manager Jim Leyland said he will serve as the team's closer. Fantasy Tip: Bruce Rondon was also called up from Triple-A Toledo today, but he'll likely be used in less stressful situations in his first taste of regular season big league action. There's a decent chance that Valverde is still available in your mixed league, so run to the waiver wire and grab him. Joaquin Benoit was never Detroit's long-term solution at closer and shouldn't be expected to receive any save chances moving forward with both Valverde and Rondon in the picture. Rondon is worth holding since Valverde hasn't been tested against major league competition since relinquishing the ninth-inning role to Phil Coke in the playoffs last year. Leyland has announced his loyalty to Valverde, but if he doesn't get the job done, Rondon will be given an opportunity to take the job and run with it.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 14:21:56 -0700 The Detroit Tigers plan to call up RP Jose Valverde from the minors within days. Fantasy Tip: Bruce Rondon was called up today, so the addition of Valverde will further complicate the Tigers' plans for the back end of their bullpen. Joaquin Benoit has done a solid job as the closer so far, but Jim Leyland may be getting ready to go back to a closer-by-committee soon if Valverde and Rondon prove effective. For now, hang onto Benoit until we know more. Rondon and Valverde are worth owning, too, but it's more speculation right now until we learn exactly how Leyland plans to use them.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 10:07:19 -0700 The Detroit Tigers recalled RP Bruce Rondon from Triple-A Toledo Tuesday, April 23, after they placed RP Octavio Dotel (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list. Fantasy Tip: Jim Leyland and the Tigers haven't made any announcements that Rondon is in line to take save opportunities away from Joaquin Benoit, but Rondon should be scooped up if he's available. They'll likely have him working less stressful innings to build up his confidence, and if he performs well, he could eventually be knocking on the ninth-inning door once again.
Thu, 11 Apr 2013 08:30:38 -0700 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said RP Joaquin Benoit will be his primary closer option. "On a lot of the days, if it's doable, I think Benoit is the most experienced and versatile enough against righties and lefties to pitch the ninth," Leyland said. "But it's not going to be doable every day. You're liable to see anybody at any time... until something else happens, if it does happen." Leyland said it's "very unlikely" Benoit would close three consecutive days. Also, Leyland said he would like to avoid pitching Benoit in more than one inning. Fantasy Tip: That sounds like a very cautious compliment. It sounds very much like there will still be a committee at closer, but Benoit looks like the best option. We'd add him in most leagues, but temper your expectations. Phil Coke, Al Alburquerque and eventually Jose Valverde could be factors, depending on matchups.
Mon, 01 Apr 2013 17:31:41 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Phil Coke got the opening day save against the Minnesota Twins, retiring the only two left-handed batters he saw in the ninth inning. RP Joaquin Benoit retired one right-handed batter to lead off the ninth for the Tigers. Fantasy Tip: The Tigers are expected to use a closer-by-committee system to open up the year, with Coke being the top option, along with Benoit and Octavio Dotel. It is expected that Jim Leyland will use all three for favorable matchups.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:59:51 -0700 Detroit Tigers RPs Phil Coke, Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel figure to see the bulk of save chances with manager Jim Leyland using a closer-by-committee setup to begin the season. RP Bruce Rondon will serve as the closer at Triple-A Toledo in order to try and find consistency. Rondon made a mechanical tweak this spring that seemed to help out, but the team wants him to work on it some more in the minors. General manager Dave Dombrowski didn't rule out the team bringing Rondon up quickly, but they aren't putting a time frame on it. Fantasy Tip: Coke may be the best option after Leyland relied on him late in last year's postseason when Jose Valverde struggled. However, they may only decide to use him in the ninth when they face mainly lefty hitters. All three are worth owning in AL leagues, and Rondon should probably be stashed in deep enough leagues.
Sun, 27 Jan 2013 21:52:45 -0800 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday, Jan. 27, that RP Joaquin Benoit is not considered a candidate to close due to physical limitations. "Joaquin Benoit physically, I don't think he can do it. With all due respect to Benoit, he doesn't bounce back," Leyland said of potential back-to-back days of work.
Tue, 15 Jan 2013 17:09:52 -0800 The Detroit Tigers were not involved in making a run at Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano and never made him an offer, according to general manager Dave Dombrowski. The Tigers are prepared to give RP Bruce Rondon a chance to compete for the closer role with RPs Joaquin Benoit, Phil Coke and Octavio Dotel.
Thu, 20 Sep 2012 11:03:13 -0700 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he'd like to refrain from using RPs Phil Coke and Brayan Villarreal again Thursday, Sept. 20. Also, RP Joaquin Benoit will not be available.
Wed, 08 Aug 2012 07:58:08 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) was unavailable Tuesday, Aug. 7, with a sore right shoulder.
