Mariners | Seattle trades for Joaquin Benoit

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 10:27:22 -0800

The Seattle Mariners traded for San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit Thursday, Nov. 12, in exchange for P Enyel De Los Santos and INF Nelson Ward.

Fantasy Tip: The Mariners are really trying to fortify their bullpen for 2016, and they may not be done adding. It's unclear who would be the favorite to close with Tom Wilhelmsen and Carson Smith currently the top candidates. Benoit would likely fill more of an eighth-inning setup role like he did with San Diego, but he could fall into some closing opportunities if injuries strike.

Padres | Joaquin Benoit on the trade block

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 14:27:20 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit is available in the trade market, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit's fantasy value depends on his role in the bullpen. He has a 1.98 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP and a 9.6 K/9 over the past three seasons, and he has 37 saves during the span. If Benoit lands in the closer role, he'll check out as a mid-tier reliever. As it stands, Benoit is a ratio stabilizer in deep mixed leagues who can vulture the odd win and save to roster.

Padres | Joaquin Benoit's option picked up

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 16:02:27 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit's $8 million option for the 2016 season was picked up Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit is the primary eighth-inning setup man and fantasy handcuff to Craig Kimbrel. There's really no reason to roster Benoit in a shallow mixed league unless Kimbrel is traded or injured before the 2016 season.

Padres | Friars pull 2 pitchers back

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 16:34:01 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Ian Kennedy and RP Joaquin Benoit have both been pulled back, after being claimed on waivers Tuesday, Aug. 18. Both pitchers are now ineligible to be traded.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts, as he had significantly upped his value. Benoit has allowed just one earned run in his last 11.0 innings pitched, as he continues to be a reliable option at the backend of the Padres' bullpen.

Padres | Friars could still deal pending FAs

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 13:39:16 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Ian Kennedy, RP Joaquin Benoit and OF Will Venable will not be extended contract extension offers, if they are not dealt in August.

Fantasy Tip: The Padres have a favorable upcoming schedule and playoff aspirations, so they stood pat at the deadline. However, they could still deal a few pending free agents, if they prove to be out of contention next month. It is a fluid situation, but at this point, it seems likely Kennedy, Benoit and Venable will stick with the Friars for a playoff race.

Yankees | NY won't settle for Ian Kennedy, Joaquin Benoit

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:09:23 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Ian Kennedy and RP Joaquin Benoit are not of interest to the New York Yankees if they can't acquire Padres RP Craig Kimbrel, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy, Benoit or Kimbrel could all still be dealt in separate deals, but the Yankees have their sights set high while trying to upgrade an already stellar bullpen. Stay tuned as the trade deadline approaches.

Astros | Houston monitoring reliever market

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 10:46:41 -0700

San Diego Padres RPs Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit and Milwaukee Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez are of interest to the Houston Astros as they look to upgrade their bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Houston's interest in adding a bullpen arm is not what owners of Luke Gregerson want to hear, as he'd likely be removed from the closer role if they add one of those arms at the deadline. Other closing candidates would emerge in San Diego or Milwaukee, too, if a trade goes down. Stay tuned.

Padres | Joaquin Benoit fully recovered

Fri, 08 May 2015 09:05:07 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) is fully recovered from right shoulder inflammation that he had been dealing with, according to manager Bud Black. Benoit hasn't appeared in the last five games and seven of the team's last eight contests.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit lost pretty much all of his fantasy value right before the 2015 season started when the Friars traded for lights-out closer Craig Kimbrel. And with Benoit inconsistent in the early going, he's not making much of a case to be owned in deep NL-only leagues, either.

Padres | Joaquin Benoit's value plummets

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 16:11:27 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit will lose nearly all fantasy value with the addition of RP Craig Kimbrel Sunday, April 5.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit was set to open the season as the Padres closer but will now be relegated to a setup role. Unless you're in a league that counts holds, Benoit can be thrown to the waiver wire.
