Mariners | Joaquin Benoit being eased in

Wed, 18 May 2016 15:11:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) is being eased in after returning from the disabled list Tuesday, May 17. Manager Scott Servais said they're unlikely to use Benoit on back-to-back days any time soon. Benoit hasn't pitched since April 21, but Servais said Benoit will return to pitch in high-leverage situations.

Fantasy Tip: With Steve Cishek blowing multiple saves within the last week, Benoit could eventually become a replacement option in the ninth inning if the M's choose to go that direction. It looks like Cishek has plenty of rope for now, though, especially with Benoit being eased back in. But Benoit has plenty of closing experience, and he should be stashed in deeper leagues if you're desperate for saves or if you own Cishek.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit off DL

Tue, 17 May 2016 13:48:08 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, May 17. RP Mayckol Guaipe was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma to make room for Benoit on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: This is noteworthy because Benoit is a relief pitcher with closing experience. While the move hasn't been made yet, Steve Cishek is on dangerous ground as the Mariners' closer. He has blown three saves in five days. You may want to pick up Benoit as a "handcuff" to Cishek in case Benoit is promoted to closer.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit to throw sim game

Fri, 13 May 2016 15:39:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) will throw simulated innings Saturday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit is getting closer to a return and will likely return to his eighth-inning setup role behind Steve Cishek. Cishek has been remarkable in the early going and has rediscovered the command that made him a successful closer with Miami years ago. Unless Cishek starts to unravel, Benoit is merely a handcuff guy for Cishek owners in the deepest of leagues.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit progressing well

Tue, 10 May 2016 16:06:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) said his bullpen workout on Monday, May 9, went well. He'll throw again on Wednesday, May 11, and then tentatively pitch in a simulated game by the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like the 15-year veteran is progressing nicely. He's been one of the most consistent setup men in the business over the past several years, so Benoit might have something to offer owners in deep mixed leagues when he returns. With the Mariners winning right now, he can at least be useful to those who are in leagues that score holds.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit throwing bullpen

Mon, 09 May 2016 15:45:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Monday, May 9, and will have a day-after evaluation Tuesday, May 10.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, Benoit should return to high-leverage work, which makes him a viable option in deep mixed leagues. From 2010 to 2015, he returned a 2.35 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and 10.0 K/9 with four wins and seven saves per season. And, if closer Steve Cishek implodes or sustains an injury, Benoit projects to step into ninth-inning duty.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit feeling good

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:39:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) played catch on Sunday, May 1, and felt "really good," according to manager Scott Servais. He's eligible to return from the disabled list Friday, May 6, but likely won't be ready before the middle of the month. He's one of the best in the business in that regard.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Benoit is probably going to return to the team in a couple of weeks. When he's ready, the 38-year-old should resume his regular duties as Seattle's main setup man.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit to throw soon

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 23:52:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) has been on the 15-day disabled list for four days and has not yet begun throwing. That is likely to happen this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit has been working in the eighth inning as a setup man for closer Steve Cishek. When healthy he is helpful in rotisserie fantasy formats for help in ERA and WHIP, and he is a solid option in formats which reward holds.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit to DL

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 14:25:28 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled lists with right shoulder inflammation Monday, April 25. RP Mayckol Guaipe was recalled from Class AAA Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Benoit was serving as the eighth-inning setup man to Steve Cishek in Seattle. With Benoit on the DL, Tony Zych should be expected to set up for Cishek in the back end of the bullpen, and he's worth a stash in deeper leagues if you're speculating for saves or handcuffing Cishek.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit says he's ready

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 14:49:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) says he's ready to pitch again after dealing with tightness in his upper back and shoulder for the last week. The Mariners turned to RP Joel Peralta twice in the eighth inning to protect leads when Benoit was unavailable, and Peralta gave up leadoff home runs both times.

Fantasy Tip: Despite being 38 years old, Benoit has closing experience and will return to eighth-inning setup duties for Steve Cishek. Cishek has had problems recently in the ninth inning for the Miami Marlins, and he may be on a short leash, meaning Benoit deserves ownership in deeper leagues for save speculators.

Mariners | Joaquin Benoit could be back this weekend

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 16:41:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) said he is feeling better and hopes to be back this weekend against the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: The 38-year-old entered the year as the main setup man to closer Steve Cishek, but his injury and age should have you concerned. Benoit has the experience closing, so he'd likely be first in line for the closer role if Cishek is hurt or stumbles, but strikeout-happy Tony Zych is worth rostering in much deeper leagues.
