Browns | OC talks about rookie quarterbacks

Thu, 06 Feb 2014 18:14:45 -0800

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan discussed Thursday, Feb. 6, how to handle rookie quarterbacks. While he didn't say if the team would nab a QB with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, he did say he will have input in the upcoming draft, and will be part of the contingent heading to the NFL Scouting Combine. "Usually if you spend a high pick on a guy, there's some stuff that they do pretty well. You have to figure out and anticipate how the NFL is going to play that stuff when you put that in your scheme," Shanahan said. "And you don't to put too much pressure on him. Make it loose for him. Make it stuff he's confident in doing and he's done in his career prior. You let him focus on that early."

Thu, 06 Feb 2014 12:46:26 -0800

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan talked about his relationship with QB Robert Griffin III in his time with the Washington Redskins. "And a thing that I always did with him and that we did with each other is when stuff would come out, we'd address it," Shanahan said. "You know, we'd get into our room, we'd talk about it and make sure we felt good about it. And I think Robert and I, through a very tough time, we managed to keep our relationship through the year. I'm not gonna say it was easy. Nothing's easy when you go through something like that. But I do believe going through it, Robert and I, in the long run, it'll make both of us better. It's something that is a challenge, and I do believe going through that, as hard as it was, will help me. And I think when it's all said and done and Robert and I look back on it, I'm really appreciative of some of the stuff he did for me. And I really believe he'll be appreciative of some of the stuff I did for him."

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said he is looking forward to the prospect of coaching away from his fathers shadow. "I'm looking forward to it," the younger Shanahan said. "I think it's gonna be nice when I hear the head coach's last name and 'S' isn't always tagged to the end of it the Shanahans. So I'm looking forward to that part. But I've worked a lot of years in the NFL. I started out my career away from my dad. That was always a goal of mine, to prove myself before I ever coached with my dad….I thought that I HAD proved myself. And it was something I always wanted to do in my life I wanted to coach with my dad at one time. I enjoyed it. We went through some ups and downs, but it's something I wouldn't take back for anything. Excited to move on and be done with that part of my life, but I think it made me better, and it's something I'm glad that I did."

Redskins | Kyle Shanahan defends zone-read plays

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 16:29:47 -0700

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said the club doesn't have to eliminate the option running elements in order to protect QB Robert Griffin III (knee). Echoing his father, head coach Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan contended that the read-option plays safeguard Griffin by taking steam out of opposing pass-rushers. Griffin was hurt on improvisational runs and merely needs to work on picking his spots to slide or throw the ball away when facing QB pressure. The younger Shanahan said that they might have to adapt more as defenses plan better for the system.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is a borderline QB1 on draft day with well-known upside. If you take him, just make sure to draft a capable backup in case he can't start the season on time.
