Sat, 05 Jul 2008 06:29:41 -0700 The Associated Press reports former San Diego Chargers SS Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a sedan he was driving following a party. Kiel, 27, was driving alone after leaving the party late Friday, July 4, when he hit a wall in San Diego's Scripps Ranch neighborhood and was thrown from the car, according to police Sgt. Alan Hayward. Kiel was barely breathing when paramedics reached him and he died about an hour later, Hayward said. Friends had tried to keep Kiel from driving home from the party, Hayward added, and witnesses told police he appeared to be driving in the wrong direction when he crashed.

Wed, 07 Feb 2007 06:47:04 -0800 Brent Schrotenboer, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers SS Terrence Kiel's recent legal troubles, including his involvement in the shipping of codeine-based cough syrup that got him arrested, are believed to be as a result of frequent gambling losses at casinos which led Kiel to seek other means of income, according to law enforcement authorities. Officials were told in their investigation that gambling is "exactly what caused the problem, that he was in over his head because he gambles too much," San Diego Deputy District Attorney Damon Mosler said. Kiel is due in court Wednesday, Feb. 7, for a trial readiness hearing on five felony charges related to the cough syrup incident.

Kiel faces a maximum of seven years and four months in state prison if convicted of five felony charges: three counts of possession for sale of a controlled substance and two counts of transporting a controlled substance.

Tue, 03 Oct 2006 22:16:54 -0700 The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers S Terrence Kiel pleaded not guilty Tuesday, Oct. 3 to charges he shipped bottles of codeine-based cough syrup to Texas. Deputy District Attorney James Fontaine said Kiel faces a maximum of seven years and four months in state prison if convicted of all five felony drug counts. Drug Enforcement Administration officials said Kiel admitted to shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup to Texas via FedEx. The agency has found widespread abuse in Texas of codeine-based cough syrup mixed with soft drinks or drugs. Fontaine said the district attorney's office is still investigating where Kiel got the cough syrup. Kiel is cooperating with the investigation, according to his attorney Robert Grimes.
